So far I have read nothing that would convince me that I would prefer them over my HD800. Sorry Sennheiser.

I doubt I'd get them if I already owned HD800 either.  For me, the HD800S will be an upgrade to my 12 year old HD600.

Finally returning the HD 800 and waiting to buy the HD 800 S.  Looks like HD 800 S would be better and with good sound stage.  Any ideas?  I had the HD 800 for 10 days for now.  Was using it with MKIII Taboo.  Hope i am making the right choice here by returning it and waiting on the HD 800 S.

That depends on what made you send the HD800 back...

I don't think Sennheiser wants to make you buy the HD800S in addition to the HD800 (though I'm sure they would happily sell you one  -- its their offer for those who did *not* like the original HD800...

To be honest I liked the HD 800, but the high pitch was really causing some fatigue to my ears and I assume HD 800S will help that. Also I guess the new one looks better (black) and it is new.  Since I got this HD 800 10 days ago I thought worth getting the new one for 1699.  I need some suggestions

Also I am used it with my Taboo MK III headphone Amp with Modi2 DAC.  I liked the audio signature better than the LCD-2 (rev2).  I was wondering the HD 800 S would be better and I assume it is with the Anaxilus mod.

In that case the HD800S may just be what you want.

I have the HD800 with Anax 2.0 mod coupled with a good balanced copper cable and using Sonarworks EQ software and I can say that the sound coming out of these babies are very enjoyable and magical. I have no intention of ever upgrading to the 'S'.

Since we are throwing out cables anyone tried double helix and specifically spore versus compliment 4, does spore provide any tangable auditory benefits.

It depends on how much you paid for your HD 800 headphones. With most HD 800 headphones selling between $900 used and $1200 new, upgrading to the HD 800 S at $1700 probably does not make sense-- especially if you have no use for the XLR 4 balanced cable. The biggest winners in all of this are the people who are buying used HD 800 headphones and adding the Anaxilus modification because they are saving between $800-900. If you already have the HD 800 you should keep them and add the Anaxilus modification and save a lot of money.

I paid $1100 the new HD 800.  Here I will be spending 599 more in case i upgrade, and i am getting the balanced 4 pin XLR cable as well with HD 800 S, which I can use with my MK III Taboo headphone amp.  My only worry is modding the new headphone and if I do wrong I might void the warranty.

Secondly I am not sure if MKIII Taboo is a good Amp for HD 800 - coz the power output for 300 Ohm headphone is 1700 mw, where Sennhizer says max for the head phone is
500 mW as per EN 60-268-7.  I  am confused and I am not an expert so was wondering.

The comparison with IE 800 is, I think, relevant:

The enhanced sound reproduction of the HD 800 S is achieved through the addition of the innovative absorber technology that was pioneered in the Sennheiser IE 800 – a breakthrough that preserved the audibility of very high frequency sounds by eliminating a phenomenon known as the “masking effect”, where the human hear struggles to hear frequencies of sound when lower frequencies of a higher volume occur at the same time. By absorbing the energy of the resonance, Sennheiser’s patented absorber technology prevents any unwanted peaks and allows all frequency components – even the finest nuances – in the music material to become audible.

from http://en-uk.sennheiser.com/hd-800-s

When I demmed IE800s a year ago I thought the treble was the best headphone treble I'd ever heard (but I haven't listened to many headphones and own HD 650 eq'd with an upper treble lift).

For what it's worth, I plan to get HD 800 S asap, to go with my shiny new Hugo TT, which is just sublime.
