Sennheiser HD800S Unveiled!

Yes, it would be nice if the hd800s had some new driver tech or something besides sound absorbing material and hey looky there, a balanced cable. Any owner who has not heard their hd800's with a balanced cable would certainly bite down hard upon hearing a balanced setup. Be nice to know it the hdvd800 has a better dac too.

The new HD800S should be shipped soon (before X'mas?). Otherwise the sale of regular HD800s may be stalled too much or there may be too much pressure for deep discount of the old model. Uncertainty of the price and sound signature is not good for business and consumers.

Perfect timing.

I was 1 click off purchasing an HD800 last night, but something held me back and I ordered the RS185 wireless ones instead.

Somethings changed in regards to pricing in Oz for Sennheiser, with the HD800's available for $AU1,350 - that's about $US970 at the moment.

HD800 & HDVD800 together would come to about $US2,500 - over $1,000 cheaper than BestBuy is selling the bundle for in the States.

Last time I looked any official retailers here were stuck at RRP and not budging.

Similar predicament here. Do I buy the HD800 before they leap in price because of the crappy dollar or, do I wait for the latest?

One of the things holding my finger back last night were the reports of the treble and need to the mod.

If I bought the original now I'd always have the thought in the back of my mind wondering "what if"

For such a big purchase where small suggestions and bias can change your perception of what you hear - I'd be sure to be pulling my hair out.

I think I'll wait and head to a shop when both are in stock. If I can't hear a noticeable difference or preference then will be a lot more content buying the older (discounted???) model.
If I can then the new one would be peace of mind.

I can't imagine they keep the regular 800 alongside this, claim some acoustic absorber, and then don't add a bunch to the price. $3k seems to be the new craze. I just wish some of these headphones with crazy pricetags would crash and burn so that manufacturers could see that it wouldn't pay to charge outlandish prices like these. I'm hoping this is at most $300 more, but my intuition and obvious demand for the changes they describe make this seem unlikely.

Edit: balanced cable is $300 more right there. So I guess we're looking at 2000 at least. *sigh*

Today is my birthday, this is the best present! Time to sell the old gear and get this. Hope it's not more expensive than $2500.

You would hope that the black paint/enamel will not chip as easily as the original....

That would also be an upgrade......
