The HD800S benefits from high current, be it solid state or tube. It's a 300ohm headphone so you aren't going to get the best from your phone or pocket chip amp.

I was considering trying out some Dekoni elite hybrid pads to (hopefully) add a splash of bass without messing with the rest of the signature. Any thoughts on these pads to accomplish this?

The standard recommendation is to use HD800S with tube amps. And I agree with that. Until recently, I used them with tubes only, and they sounded amazing. But since then, I made a few lineups for different sounding headphones and different sound.

I decided to pair HD800S with Burson Conductor 3X Reference.
I had an idea of what I wanted to get there, and I did, even more. I have a perfectly clean-sounding set-up. But also very enjoyable.

There is a lot of talk about the new Composer headphones, which I tried at the Hi-Fi show in November, and I wasn't very impressed with their performance.

Actually, I had problems listening to them on certain occasions due to piercing highs.

Having Composer in mind and a lot of talk about them (even though there are no similarities in general between these two), I think that I got for my taste a better sounding and enjoyable, involving combination with lots of clarity and details.

Bass is still the bass of the HD800S, but for me, there is enough of it, and it serves the purpose completely.

So, it would be interesting to hear if any of you tried to pair HD800S with the same sounding DAC/Amp as the Burson Conductor 3x Reference.

Cheers!

HD800S benefits more from EQ than different amps Imo, it's cheaper too.
The only negative to this method is for those of us who are not comfortable with the setup and configuration of EQ. I guess I need to give up the ghost and learn how. Any links or advice is appreciated.

You don't need to EQ bass (amp and dac synergy solves that). You may need EQ for the treble. However, instead of using electronic EQ which may not be desirable, you can simply add TP in front of the driver. Add a single ply at a time until you arrive at your desired FR. TP will basicly act as front damping with a low Q cut of 5-7khz, which just so happens to coincide with the slight tilt in that area based on the raw response. You can obviously use other front damping materials, but you need to first characerize the effects of the material.

Is there a case that fits with the cables attached, or do y'all use the original box it came in?

Easiest: Equalizer APO + Peace GUI + AutoEQ button
Next easiest: PEQ included in your streaming platform of choice + AutoEQ database

No real learning necessary.
