IMO, fine grain mesh in front of diaphragm (fine cover) will raises the pressure (or vaccuming it depeding polarity of signal) if its venting not enough.
Like you shut a sealed-room door, there's a resistance from the raising room air pressure, near the end of stroke (that time, door close to be closed but still have gap for venting).
The air volume changing is not much (door are multiple few cm along of stroke) in comparision to your room volume.
Because of that, raising of air pressure in room is quite small, but, it acts reinforce to the door.
Smaller the space (room size), the more air raising (same door size).
Diaphragm to fine mesh is quite small. It can alter the sound by raise up air pressure, also dampenning the impulse.
We may all know that lower air pressure ambient will not well in transfer the low freq, it can make a lack of bass as like you listening on a flat flying airplane.
IMO, a best condition for diaphragm to reproduces audio is when pressure is balance both side of driver, and the raise on a side is same as decrease amount on the other side

I believe it's sonic transparent IF the fine mesh stick on ear hole of listener, or, locate some where in front of the ear... not right infront of driver.

Yes, I take the theoretical point. Whether I'm sufficiently interested to engage in headphone surgery is another matter ... I guess I might be if I had any real concerns about the HD800S as it stands (sans dust covers) ... perhaps my problem here is that I think it's just about right w/o surgery ...

Not yet fix it onn reason is the bass need more time to check.
Now at least metal mesh it's ok apperance to me.
Detail of highs make I drop my tear for woman singer vocal.
Listening w/o cover, I can detect objects like a hand near back of headphone, it cause resonance. Depend on shape of palm, when flat or curve toward driver it gain the mid, bass.
Palm form a curve toward outside blend vocal to imagine in other way: it sound futher to the ear than w/o palm.
(I usually feel vocal of 800s is not wide as instruments and its more centric focus)

Which earpads are those? They look nice. Thanks
Geekria lamb skin pads.
It's not all lamb skin (for area that not contact to listener's face) but so cheap and good sonic perfomance

I finally chose option A because of easier. Simply stick by glue.
The highs are fine grain, britle/crips, tenderly touch eardrum, none piercing attack even higher volume.
Nothing to mention on lows.
No change (I've though it loose and slow kick in, long decay but may be I was wrong).
Clarity of high pitch femal vocal is excellent

A set of spare parts which are so cheap at $15!!

Full surface are lamb skin. Not like my prev set cost 5 times but not fully lamb skin (lamb skin and faux leather. Life span determine by faux leather bcs real leather last so long)

I got my hd800s used & have never seen a new pair.

The thing is, I don't know if the ear pads & headpad need replacement or are worn down at all. If they do, I intend to buy original Sennheiser replacements because I like them, but they are not inexpensive & I don't want to spend money if not needed (I have tried third party replacements but prefer the originals)

so, photos of mine below.

Answers appreciated :)

Fiber pad sound thin to me and time after time it sound more thin and lite due to worn out.
My stock pad was replaced when it released material as black dust each touching by hand or gently wipe by soft brush.
I had not used fiber pad again.
Leather sound bolder bass and mid, more density of sound.
Lamb skin is best to be touch too, soft, skin friendly

Thanks but I'm sticking with the official pads as I love the sound. Each third party replacement has subtly altered the sound imho.

For what it's worth, I also prefer the stock pads. I agree they sound different; and that all the third-party replacements sound different in their own ways. I suspect this may be controversial, but I've always found them to feel cooler than leather or faux leather. I'm a heavy user, and find I like to replace pads every couple of years.
