Popped into my local audio store yesterday to audition the ALO range of Reference 8 (HD800) cables
Setup was a laptop with Foobar2000, ASIO, and a Nuforce HDP lining out to a Sugden Masterclass HA-4.
Test Material :-
* Cyndi Lauper ~ various tracks from her 'Best of'
* Cavalli Audio Demo Disc ~ the man certainly loves his B52's!
* Eagles ~ New York Minute (just the one track)
As I found out soon there after ~
2 out of 3 ain't bad!
Swapping between the OEM cable and the ALO Salt and Pepper revealed no difference
to my ears with Cyndi Lauper's best efforts, from
'She-Bop' to
'I drove all night', there was
nothing in it, no further detail nor any added separation or soundstage. This was tested
back and forth a total of 4 times before I decided - it's just not there on the material.
The Cavalli Audio disc was a different matter ~ there's a few breathy vocals on that disc
and this is where the ALO cable showed it's cards. No further detail to be discerned but
the sound stage depth became much more apparent, almost like the slightest of echoes
of each note being sung - transparency definitely taking a turn for being more life like
on the ALO Ref8 cable.
'New York Minute' also kept this touch of transparency, the real clincher appeared with
a quick comparison with the Luxman integrated amp, Luxman transport and Vienna Acoustic
book shelves that were behind me at the time - this setup sounded fantastic and while any
comparison between speakers and headphones may be a bridge too far for some, the ALO cable
did add that sense of space that was not noticeable with the OEM cable, both cables did manage
to pick up a small detail here or there that I could not hear through the Vienna Acoustics so that
says a lot for the HD800's amazing detail retrieval.
All in all, there was a difference to my ears in terms of transparency ~ but only if the material
was of exceptional quality, only the individual can decide whether such a cable expense is warranted
for their listening tastes and desires.
