Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?

Just got my malvix grills installed. I purchased these primarily for the aesthetics and because my stock 660s grills had the paint wearing off, so I went in expecting absolutely no difference. Doing some brief a/b testing from a similar passage, however, I can hear a difference. My 660s definitely have a bit more sub-bass rumble. To me, they now sound slightly more like my 660s2 but without sacrificing any of the 660s mids quality.

I have a set i use on my 6xx. I like them. They open up the stage a bit.

If I'm going to run headphones right off my laptop, should I get these or the hd560s?

Of the Sennheisers I have owned and liked, I think the HD 599 are the best choice for running off of laptop/phone/etc. without external amplification. But while I have had the 600 series cans apart from the S2 and my current favorite is the HD-660S, the HD-560S is not one I have owned yet :)

Pads on the HD 650 and HD 660S are the same. I have both and both are new pairs. What’s going on is they changed the pads for all of the HD 6xx line and the new pads have a longer life and don’t flatten near as much or quickly. All HD 6xx headphones have the same pads, there is just a newer revision of the pads.

Did you choose the 660S over s2? I've seen a few saying the mids on the 660S were preferred over 660S2 (though overall the s2 being superior)

And have you tried older pads with 660S/s2, or just the stock one?

I got some fatigue from the S2 on my system and mine also had a channel imbalance so ended up returning them due to that, channel imbalance may be what fatigued me and I’ll also be using them on a different amp/dac next time I get it. Will revisit them in the future as I did enjoy their sound. I will likely enjoy them a bit more than the S if I get a good pair due to it's technical superiority. No haven’t tried other or worn pads on the S2.

Now I will tell you a big secret. I bought the HD660 out of curiosity and I was not impressed at all by the sound from these headphones. Compared to my favorite HD580, there was too much midrange and not enough treble, the sound is very vague. And then I installed the driver from the HD660 into the case from the HD580 with a silk bafle. And what do you think? These are now my favorite headphones. Everything sounds just great, I don't even know why the HD660S2 are needed - I already have enough bass, it is clearer than the HD580 and the high frequencies are also much clearer. I don't understand why Sennheiser made this metal mesh bafles. I have already experimented with this before and for me, every version of the headphones starting with the HD580 (they started from a paper bafle) sounds worse and worse. I like the paper version of bafle the best, but there is very little bass level with the HD660 driver. Perhaps this metal mesh gives some better technical measurements, but it kills all the liveliness of the music and detail. Only good low frequencies remain. Try black silk bafle base from HD580 or early HD600. Or even paper frome the earlt HD580 or HD565/545/535. You just don't recognize your HD660 headphones. I think Sennheiser made a mistake. I don't understand this. And the HD600 with the black baffle sound better than the metallic silver one. Have you had this experience? I currently have my HD540, HD580 with paper baffle and HD660 with silk bafle and that's all I need from these headphones.

Good to know, so the HD660S will stick next to my K872 with the D800S in between...and wait for a "black" version of the NDH30 to be released.
...ah...... no more talk of Neumann on this thread till then. :dt880smile:
Maybe we have a beauty contest now!

Χίλια συγγνώμη...but absolutely not.

Although the 30 black edition look magnificent nothing is more beautiful than the 660s in the original box. Not even elex...maybe 820...but still the matte finish and these pads look and feel supreme...
I can't believe they went from that beautiful box for the 660s to a tiny cloth bag for the 660s2.

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
While the 6## series is iconic for being so friendly to the senses, I find that the Neumann design language is more industrial, in the best sense, like Nagra devices, or the high end Sony Walkmans of the past. The new black finish on the NDH 30, combined with that precise metallic construction makes it really special. It oozes high quality in an effortless and understated way. Luckily, even more so when it is connected! lol

Wait. Are they actually releasing an all black NDH 30!?
