Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?

The HD 800 treble is extremely grainy? That is a first.
Compared, for example, to the HD650, NightHawk, P9 and Z1R, most certainly.

Well, that is also a first. The HD 650 is no match for the HD 800 in the technical performance side. But I leave you to it if that is what you think :p

Depends on our hearing but I also definitely found the 600 and 650s grainier than the 800/S and I'm hoping the 660s driver carry on a bit of the 700s character.
From my initial HD700 observations a few years ago and that was in comparison to the 600s, 650s came later.......
Well my initial impressions and after a few days still stand and they have actually appeared to improve on my original observations.
Listening to Kathleen Battle’s “Grace” album was a treat and just to quote the opening liner notes ” Kathleen Battle’s voice is like a diamond—pure, clear, radiant, and beautiful….” What more can I say.

I found that the case as well with the HD 600 and HD 650, they are grainier than the HD 800/S. Based on my short listening experience, I felt the HD 660S was less grainy than the HD 600/650 but I can't confirm until I have more time listening. I have the HD 660S coming in so I will be spending a lot of time with the HD 660S soon.

Treble that only pigeons would enjoy.
That would be the Ultrasone Edition 12 that I owned for a short period of time. I was sooo happy to sell it with only a little loss...but the HD800 is far from that.

I am listening to Adele 19 right now. Sony WM1A balanced out high gain >HD660S It is a pure pleasure. Adele is always on the edge to being uncomfortable to listen to for me, here the HD660S excels right now.

I thought we were talking about grainy treble?

And I could give a hoot about technical performance. I like music. I don't wear a lab coat when kicking back and enjoying tunes.:p

Are you hearing any grain?

On the grain topic..

Yes, both 600 and 650 have grain (mids and treble). Not excessive. In a way, it helps make the sound less artificial to my ears. DT880/990/1990 and HD800 have less grain.

From what I hear, the 660 sounds like a great headphone for me, but I don't want to pay >$500 CAD for it. I'll wait until the price comes down/get it from another country.

For those who find that the HD650 have grain in the mids and highs, may I suggest that you switch to an alternative weed!

Can someone try and explain to me what 'grain' refers to in a sound signature?
Is there an audio-clip that can show this more clearly for the HD 660S?

It means 'coarse', but to a lesser extent. Most headphones that dare show the treble have some kind of grain. Rolling off the top alleviates this somewhat but you also throw out the baby with the bathwater.

To identify grain, an example would be to listen to the PSB M4U1 and then the HD700. You would notice raggedness in the HD700 treble.

Best to describe it is you watch a VHS on a 4K television. The picture is not sharp, clear and clean. You would even see blocks.

The Z1R is technically very good. I didn't hear much grain there. I cannot say anything about the Z7 as I didn't hear that headphone.

You don’t get visual blocky artifacts with VHS it’s analogue, thats digital compression artifacts. You would see a lot of noise though.

This is one of the better definitions of "grain" that I've found that was on the Crutchfield site:
"A particularly annoying treble characteristic is graininess. Treble grain is a coarseness overlaying treble textures. I notice it most on solo violin, massed violins, flute, and female voice. On flute, treble grain is recognizable as a rough or fuzzy sound that seems to ride on top of the flute's dynamic envelope. (That is, the grain follows the flute's volume.) Grain makes violins sound as though they're being played with hacksaw blades rather than bows—a gross exaggeration, but one that conveys the idea of the coarse texture added by grain."
