Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?
Nov 8, 2017 at 8:05 AM Post #947 of 9,628
The hd650 is know for its scaling abilities. My amp is the ifi iCan pro. This amp is quite powerful, 14,000 mW. Having this in mind, would it be better the cheaper hd650/hd6xx or the hd660s?

I would be running the headphones with a balanced cable.

I hope any one can answer my question :)

That's what I would like to know also. Currently using HD650 with Marantz HD-Dac01 and Sony-Pha3. Has anyone tried HD660s with either of those?

I think that whatever the amp, it is strictly subjective which headphone do you prefer between 600/650/660S.

I am kinda agree. Choose a headphone first and find amp that could satisfy your needs.

I am happy with my HD6XX paring with my $4k setup. Although I am not sure if I'd get the 660S in the future. If you want a better version of the 650, go with 660s. If you only want the 650 sound, 6xx is great enough.

Thanks everyone for all your comments. And like many people say: “let your ears be the judge” I guess that’s what I am going to have to do. This hobby is all about trial and error.

I think one of the things that the HD 600/650's really got right was the size of the soundstage; Not small, but more importantly not exaggerated as seems to be the modern trend. Reading that it's bigger on the HD-660S is a bit disappointing.
If it ist any bigger, the only by a small margin. This thread looks to me, as if more and more people search for an excuse to save money. Hell no, this can is worth every € I paid for it. Then the complaint about the connectors in the video review that are used on the headphone side, hillarious, they used them on the HD414 in 1968. Maybe longer. The do what is needed, they connect.

I don't have the phones yet but I still can figure out that they don't have any major issues. How I know? Simply! Several people complain, but each has his own complaint and often the complaints say the opposite thing. If they had a major issue, it would be spotted out by everybody. Somebody says it has too small of a soundstage, somebody else that it has too big of a soundstage, somebody says it's too soft and close to HD650, somebody else that it's too harsh etc. There isn't a consensus, like in the case of HD700, where most say it's treble spiked, even some of those who like it.

Yep, the 660S sounds different than the 650. How much, and whether or not you prefer it, is completely subjective. Best thing to do if you're curious is to try one out for yourself.

I actually always felt the soundstage of the HD600, and the HD650 to a lesser degree are slightly too small and closed in, similar to the Focal Utopia...(HD650's soundstage may actually even be bigger than the Utopia).
It would actually be a welcome change to me if it was alittle bigger/wider on the HD660s.
Just my 2 cents.

I certainly don't come here with intention to spend money. That may happen, but it's not the point. Just come here to read about and discuss headphones. Glad you bought a set, and that you are sharing your experience of them with us.

My HD660s arrived today and I like them far more than my HD650. Better bass stands out immediately. As far as aesthetics.... they blow the HD650 completely out of the water. That is subjective of course. They are a worthy upgrade for me so far and I can’t wait to get these drivers loosened up. They’ll be playing nonstop for the next week... or two. :)

Wow, seems opinions on this headphone vary more than just about any I have seen.
I am definitely gonna purchase one down the road and try it out :)

A lot may have to do with the system, the different impedances does make it a bit harder to fully compare equally. A lot of amps that traditionally paired well with the HD 600/650 won’t likely with the HD 660S.
