Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?

This is another thread that I as a noob am reading from the start. One thing I already noticed is some cases where people got them when they came out and were saying how much better they were than their 600's or 650's.....but I look at their equipment list today and they kept the 600's or 650's and not the 660s. Is there a tale to be told there? Was the appeal of the 660s superficial/ not long lasting?

That is a very interesting observation. I have both (HD660S and HD6XX) and will be keeping both, but I do find myself using the HD6XX a lot more.

Although the idea that the 660S was aimed to be THE 650 replacement is endlessly debatable; the fact remains that the 660S sounds really different from any of it's 6 series brothers.

Having owned (and sold-off) multiple Senns, the 660S lasted with me for the shortest time. I was so excited to get it that I imported my set before it was launched here. Alas. Although it is not a bad headphone per say, it's just not in the right Price-performance bracket IMHO; especially given the price of the 6XX.
To me the 660S seems like a lost oppertunity for Senn. This could've been a game changer.

Partially this is due to their legendary status, great sound and reasonable price considering today's standards. Some folks have these cans in their collection because they know that once sold, they'll get them again at some point. I've seen several individuals who were on their third or fourth pair :)

Or to put it shortly, with Senns HD 600 or 650 one can't go wrong

I just love that this is coming from IFI - and I can't agree more.

But seriously tho,.. The HD660s is ment to be “semi" mobile, and therein is the comprise. It sure can be run on almost anything it will sound good, - but connect the HD650 to a better amp and it will only get better :)

Everyone is different. YMMV from everyone else. Who's to say definitively? I'll have another glass of wine now :)

Thanks! Suffice to say we know good cans when we hear them

It's also very cool that these Senns still have huge following here. Upon seeing how popular these cans still are, it's only fair to assume that they will always remain relevant in one way or another.

Avoided this headphone for years due to its reputation. I recently got it new for 150$ on offer. Not only this is one of the best dynamic headphones I ever heard, but I'm afraid I like it much more than HD600 and potentially Sundara.
Congratulations on getting a tremendous headphone at a tremendous price! It's reputation was strongly influenced by "The Godfather" of headphone reviews. He was disappointed, and I don't believe that the 660s have ever recovered. It is indeed a tremendous headphone, and if Sennheiser die hards were to take a blind test between the 660, 650, and 600, I'd bet my hard earned cash on the 660 getting the most votes (IMHO, YMMV).

Just to clarify, do you mean HD660S?
Yes. I think they've kept everything that was great about the HD600 and improved on it. I probably wouldn't buy it at their shelf price, but then again, I wouldn't spend that much on any pair of headphones anymore. I've owned my share of hi-fi pairs like LCD-2C, Ananda and Arya and I just don't think they're worth their price, unless you're earning big money and you're dedicated exclusively to audiophilia. I'm happy, for 150$ I got a pair of headphones that sounds equal to Sundara in my opinion, worse or better depending on the content played, but roughly equal, and not to mention with wonderful build quality and looks!

Has anyone tried the leather pads from Dekoni? If so, what have your results been?

I tried it with the elite sheepskin. Always when you discuss about the sound perception, things are going to change from a person to the other, but I found them to bring some “darkness” overall.
- the bass was more present
- the highs were cut a little bit, therefore the “darker tonality”.
- soundstage perception closes in a way from the original pads

Not sure about the presentation once time is passing/usage increases. I did not keep them.
