Sennheiser HD660S... Finally a successor for the HD650?

@Mike F did you put your old 650 pads on the 660? What do you think about the sound?

No, but I’ve used the HD660S enough now to know what the results would be. I’m liking them more and more as time goes on (and the pads wear in). I’m taking them home with me tomorrow for one last compare with the HD650’s. I expect though that I’ll end up keeping them. Then I’ll have all of the 6 series (and the HD580 Precision) headphones and nobody can ever accuse me again of having an uninformed or biased opinion about the HD660S! :dt880smile:

Why not, sometimes I wish I kept all my headphones instead of selling, also... Good luck if there is a HD670 gets released in future! Lol

Same thing happened with HD600 when HD650 was released. Half of the people loved it and the other half claiming it was worse, HD600 best headphone in the world they say.

That’s true, but whilst it’s true to say that the HD660S is more similar than different to the 600 and 650, it’s also true that in many ways it’s more different than they were. Different driver with a different impedance with a variety of both positive and negative results. HD600 to HD650 was just more of a minor improvement (better matched drivers with lower THD) and a slightly different tuning.

Well, I've ordered a Blue Dragon cable for the 660s. Hoping this combo is the same type of marriage made in heaven as it was for my HE500.

It's a copper cable. Regarding the HE500, it tamed a peak in the treble in the 10k region quite a bit. Turned them from a bit bright, to neutral/slightly warm, with all of the inherent strengths of that headphone. It's a marvelous combo.

what improvements did it bring to your HE500? what material is the conductor made of, copper or silver plated?

It could make it too warm then be careful, the 660S are a tad brighter than the 650 but they are definitely not a bright headphone, the treble is gentle, smooth and refined.

The Blue Dragon is a pretty neutral cable. It has the effect of really complementing the sound of good headphones. It didn’t make the HE500 lifeless, just calmed it down ever so slightly. I’ll have that and a Corpse modded Sennhesier cable with a Etymotic termination. I’ll see which works better. Looking forward to trying the Blue Dragon on my 6xx too.

At home comparing the HD660S and HD650 at length with a wide variety of material. I’ve come to realise exactly why it took Sennheiser so long to come up with a replacement for the HD650 (which they’ve decided isn’t going to be a replacement after all).
