Why are the HD650's considered mid-fi level headphones?

That topic have been covered in so many other random threads out there but essentially, some people are going off by price, it is roughly mid fi there, others go by how many other stuff out there which is better (but still very similar sounding) eg HE500 is would say (comfort aside).
Is it bad? no the HD650 is still my favourite. Did the sound suddenly get worse? no it's just that some of the newer stuff sound marginally better.
Point is, buy the headphone and don't worry so much about where it fits on the totem pole

If they are "mid-fi", then they are "high mid-fi".  With that said Sennheiser has released other cans that have knocked these off of their perch.  That doesn't make me love them any less though...

I think it's the deal with build quality/-materials, that let's people think that these are more mid-fi headphones. Now i don't mean they have bad build quaility or anything, they just tend to be a bit "plasticy" compared to similary priced headphones. at least in my opinion.

I have been using them for about 6 months now, never missed a beat. Aboslutely love them! :)

I've been listening to them back and forth between brighter headphones (HE-500, v6) and I never realized how dark they were having used them solely for quite a while, I can understand why some find it boring, it's a shame because the mids are still perfect.

Does anyone know if you can order the box for these from Sennheiser? I've searched high-and-low, and asked, but was unable to recover a part number.

The HD 600 box works too.

I've had my 650s for a few years now. Recently I picked up some HD800s. IMO the 650s are a bargain at $1000 less the 800s.

New amp for my 650s. Best I've ever heard them sound, hands down
