If you look at the Amazon.com pricing history going back to 2008, I'd say it's pretty rare, even recently.

I think it's possible that they could be clearing inventory to make way for a revised model. Just my opinion and speculation, I have no information to base that on.

I ordered mine the other day from Amazon UK for 275 euro. Cheapest anywhere else in Europe I could see in was 315 euro. Not sure if Amazon are doing a promotion or what but looks like a decent deal to me

Could be.  It's been many years since its release and the 5 series was recently updated.  The HD 600 is only available on Amazon.com through 3rd party sellers.  The Amazon.com entry says "temporarily out of stock."

I checked a few minutes ago, and the 650 had only 20 left in stock from Amazon.com itself.

Hmmmmm, if they do make an HD650 S, what would be fixed? The "Veil"? Bass quantity? Soundstage? All of the above?

I think that if they manage to improve the bass (lower THD and slightly flatter response) then the rest is solved as well.
HD650 is a headphone most people like. If I were Sennheiser I wouldn't change it much.

I just bought one yesterday from Amazon completely on a whim. I had no idea this is the end of the line for the HD650. I was shocked at the price--$299. (I also bought the last HiFiMan HM802U DAP.)

Yesterday was kind of a manic buying day all in response to my disappointment with my new Onkyo DAP and some "old" favorite headphones that are starting to become kind of harsh, brittle and parched sounding. In other words, my hearing is changing. Now I'm on a mad hunt for all things warm and mellow sounding. I hope the HD650 is a step in the right direction.

On the Sennheiser web site the HD650 are available to buy at their MSRP of $499.00.

I would not count the HD650 out yet...

Veil and precision. No mucking about with soundstage, it's fine, no mucking with bass level, it's fine.

Gosh this headphone got me way back in 2007. I knew how expensive speakers were, but here was the best Sennheiser could do and it was only 550 Aussie dollars. Why not. Later on I could afford some pricey bookshelf speakers, went to a high end stereo shop auditioned their standmounts, they had a cool remote switch that would flick through their speakers and there were lots, all good brands and pricey.

And they all sounded exactly the same compared to them HD650s...They were all crap.

Today my Mish mash of crossovers, amps, speakers almost sounds as good as the Hd650s....Yet still so far away.
