Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Hey all, I'm looking at getting a tube amp primarily for these (well HD6XX), as well as HD600, K7XX and probably HD700. I'm also leaning toward checking out the Beyer DT1990 in the near future to see what the teslas are all about. I want something under $400.

I was thinking about the Crack w/speedball, Valhalla 2, or Project Ember II (DIY would be fun for me). What say you about these 3? Are there any others I should consider as well?

Those are probably the best in that price range. Though I've only heard the vahalla2, it's an awesome amp. Others here can vouch for the others on your list. Little dot is another but I feel it falls short compared to the others.

Woo Audio WA3. I've listened to the two you mention and the Woo compares favorably, IMO. I've not heard the Project Ember II.

EDIT: especially with the HD-650 and HD-700.

If you're purely looking for the "tubey" sound to go with your HD6XX, you might consider passing up the speedball. I don't think it helps much.

How is the pairing of the Fiio X5 with the 650's?

I sometimes use my X5 with the hd650 and it works fine! I need to have the volume up around 60 instead of my more normal 30.

I prefer to have a portable amp in line though and I'm not exactly sure why, other than the reassurance that the volume pot is lower down with a little more power in reserve.

I've even used an IPod Touch with it .... just.

For HD-650/6xx, HD-700 and HD-600 this would be my choice
1. BH Crack
2. Project Ember
3. Valhalla2

If you are looking at other headphones like the DT-1990 and K7XX then:
1. Project Ember
2. Valhalla2
3. BH Crack

Just take into account the cost of the tubes for each of the amps, from my experience so far the tubes for the BH Crack will cost the most, Valhalla2 second and Ember third.  This is based on tubes that I've come to like a lot so as with anything on these threads YMMV and IMO.

Should I keep the hd600, or sell it. And join the drop.

Keep the HD600 and join the drop.  Assuming the sound signature is similar to that of the HD650 as stated by Massdrop, you will have a nice pair of complimentary headphones. And for $200.00 how could you go wrong?

With them you have the beginnings of a nice collection of cans...

I'm selling my almost-new HD650's, with box, etc.  Like new and work great, with less than 30 hours on them.  In perfect condition.  Still under warranty even!  Figured I'd post this here for the HD 650 fans first!  $300, plus shipping and any PayPal fees.  Time for me to cut back on all of my equipment that I don't use!

You should probably wait a few months after the HD6XX drop lol.
