Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

It comes down to your expectations. Mods will not change HD650, tonality is still essentially the same.

Dynamat tightens the bass. The coin mod adds a little more treble detail. People are now experimenting with rug liner too. Mods are easy and reversible (apart from spider cage removal).

Measurements have been performed elsewhere which confirm real world changes in FR which correlate with these findings.

good to hear it...anyone you suggest, should I send my senn 650s for a good mod?
I love tight bass, and detailed treble, too...my 'go to' for more detailed neutrality
are the sony 7520s...sure i hear they have some treble spike or bass hump, but the detail
and resolution is wonderful (they're closed cans, however).

wish there was someone in canada who did reputable mods on cans....

As I said, mods aren't going to make the HD650 into detail monsters give them massive sub bass extension. The tonality will be the same; warm and comfortable. The more familiar you are with HD650, the more obvious the changes will be.

Honestly, the mods aren't that hard and are easily reversible (with caveat, as mentioned above). Have a look around the net and you will find the information. It will take you an hour, give or take, or about 30 seconds and some replacement sennheiser foams to reverse.

who'd you have that mod on the 650s done by?
i'm reading mixed reivews/comments about mods on this set of cans (super audio friends forum).
...some find no diff...some seem less happy...some more happy....no consistency it seems.
so i guess it all comes down to 1/what kind of mod and possibly 2/ by whom?

i would so love to find a set of good quality set cans in which i can up/down treble/bass accordingly to ones wishes.

I was fortunate enough to buy them already modified by Noodlz here on the forums. I've never heard a stock pair of HD650s. All I can say for certain is that these are by far the best headphones I've heard yet. They sound so good this is the first time I don't feel like I need to search for something better. I prefer them over my home tower set up which was my reference until I listened to these.

I've been sitting here with a sheet of dynamat ready to mods for weeks. I'm scared too change something I already love.

I will say though that the dynamat is a no brainer. Easily reversible and doesn't change the frequency response. Just tightens the bass and lowers bass distortion, which are both good things.

Dynamat is not the easiest to get off from some surfaces, smooth plastic should not be a problem.

Anyone have suggestions for aftermarket cables for the HD650? I don't really buy into sound difference between cables, but I would like something that looks a little flashier than the stock cable. I was looking on ebay and saw these silver plated and copper cables that really look cool, but I don't know how the build quality is.

The first one looks like the one made by Luna Shop, pretty good quality for the price.

The Hd650 were my first pair of high quality headphones after starting off with the Momentums.

I own many other headphones now but I could never sell the HD650 - there's just something very special about the sound. Definitely a classic!
