I think I'm going to build a Bottlehead Crack for my HD650. They are on sale now,  $249 for the basic Crack and $299 with Speedball.

What sub $100 soldering station  would you recommend.

Thanks.

I've been using this one for the last few years: https://www.amazon.com/Weller-WES51-Analog-Soldering-Station/dp/B000BRC2XU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467210123&sr=8-1&keywords=weller

The price goes up and down a lot, I got mine for $81.  Don't forget to order some solder, flux, spare soldering tip (smaller size) and wick just in case.

Oh man, you are in for a treat. Today listened with my HD650 and encrack with SB and a new tung sol 5998 and it was such a blast.

Cheers!!

Thank you.  But with the current rate of tung sol 5998, I don't think I can afford this tube.

see if you can find a Chatham 5998, pretty close to a true TS-5998 but much cheaper

They are the same tube and sound no different.

I have been experimenting with an effect processor for simulating tube saturation. What I learned is that there is not really 1 type of tube sound because there are many variables to tweak. So that's going to be a difficult challenge to find the kind of tube amplifier that you want.

Also the HD 650 becomes smoother and softer sounding with more harmonic distortion?

Atleast, that's my short experience of messing with an effect processor which is obviously an approximation of what goes on in real analog electronics.

guys who own the 650s and  other quality cans.

i was thinking of the massdrop thx00 to compliment the senns
(seeking a musical, detailed, bass punchy, resolving sound)
but some have also suggested the Grado RS1i is a fab compliment
(for rock, blues, jazz), esp given my equipment.

thoughts?

HD650 is my favorite headphone so far. I prefer it over the HD600 and AKG701 among others.

A great headphone amp is the Benchmark DAC1 PRE. So-called zero impedance head phone jack to so it drives any type of headphone naturally and you don't any weird emphasis on certain frequency ranges (many headphones have very weird response impedance curves and can change tonal balance using the wrong sort of amp). So far the best amp I've tried. A bit pricey, but it just works with everything without a worry, no need to wonder if this or that will match it or not.

I have the TH-600, SR-225e (modded), RS2e and a few other headphones, the TH-X00 sound is close to a TH-600 so either will work for detailed, bass punchy sound, but they don't do that great with blues and jazz IMO, I rather use the SR-225e, RS2e, HD-700 or even the T1 for blues and jazz.  Since everyone hears differently YMMV.

My suggestion would be get both a TH-X00 and the RS1i then with those 3 headphones you can cover almost any genre, classical I would still go with HD-800, T1 or SR-009.
