Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Hilarious what Sennheiser is charging for that cable (CH650S)... I literally cannot believe their pricing on it, in comparison to their stock SE cable... $240; are you out of your effing mind Sennheiser?

Yeah, when I was looking for a balanced cable I saw the price of the Senn cable and just moved on immediately, though admittedly don't know how the quality compares to balanced cables offered by Moon Audio or other companies for equally high prices.

I've personally compared the HD650 with most well-known open-back headphones $500 and under. This includes the HD600, HE400i, R70x, AD1000x, Fidelio X2, K712, SRH1840, HD700, and DT880/DT990. Am I crazy to still prefer the HD650 over all those? Please tell me I'm not the only one.

It has a natural sound signature with good mids, imaging and bass. It's musical, not analytical. And it works well with just about anything you throw at it.

Not crazy at all, if that is what you prefer.

No you are not. Though I don't like the hd650s' treble, I have to say they are one of the most balanced cans under 500$.

As the others have posted you are not crazy, its what you like and that is all that matters.

Did you do the comparisons all with the same system in a environment where you had the opportunity to really relax and listen?  Asking since I have most of those headphones and would not always prefer the HD-650 for some genres of music and different situations like watching movies, gaming, or portable use.

Examples: I like the HD-700 for watching movies due to the wider sound stage and easier to drive nature where out of my HT receiver it sounds good.  The HE-400i is something that I will take with me to a friends house where I might only have a DAP to drive them.

If someone asked if they only got one headphone I would highly recommend the HD-650, as most say it one of the best all around and is forgiving of sub par recordings.

No, that's the HD650 magic. These headphones won't go anywhere for as well, they stay by my side.

Cheers!

Curious as to the headphones that you have tried?

I have kept most of what I bought but not because of best value or sound, mainly because I like the different sound signatures.  There are some genres of music that the HD-650 is not the perfect "tool for the job" like EDM and classical.

almost all below 1K€ except maybe AKG K812 (1K€) & HE560
I would say that to me best contenders sound wise were HE500 & LCD2.2 but both are too heavy and I'm suffering after a moment (I'm using my headphones 6 hours a day).
I appreciated HD700 too for some genre but HD650 are a better all-rounder to me, they are simply working with everything.
I liked AKG K7xx but to me HD650 is a bit more musical with better timbre
I also appreciated Oppo PM2, I've just bought them again for modding (looking for better impact & soundstage), they might replace my HD650, but here in EU they cost more than 3 times the price of HD650 (!!), for sure not worth the price difference.
I liked Grado PS500 but comfort was an issue and they are selling for 600/800€
I won't speak about Beyer (too bright and/or V-shaped), HE400 (no mids), HE400s/i, Nighthawk (What!) and so on.
I would like to listen again to Fidelio X2 though

HD650+Mojo = difficult to do better for less than 1K€ (again my opinion)

But again, it is a matter of taste!

Anyone paired HD650 with Shiit Vali 2?

That's what I currently run.  Very good pairing, better than the Magni 2 Uber pairing I had before.

I've owned the 400i and X2 and prefer my hd650 to them.  Only thing I liked about the X2 over my hd650 is that it's a better gaming headset IMO.

Something interesting happened, the HD 650 started sounding really good on my Sony UDA-1 to the point where it's one of the best pairings I've heard on it, very clear and dynamic, the bass slam is incredible now, reminds me of the Lyr 2 heft and dynamics but notably more refined, clearer, and musical with very full vocals and dynamics. I noticed an odd change in the sound on my other headphones on the Sony UDA-1 becoming much smoother and clearer with more powerful dynamics, well I'm convinced burn-in matters on solid state gear now, I never really used the headphone amp section that much on the Sony until recently. Anyone looking for a well priced system for the HD 650 should seriously consider the Sony UDA-1.

IMO capacitors can change quite dramatically during the first 100 hours of use. I've read this is due to the dielectric being formed, but I've also read that this should happen within the first few hours of power up.

In my personal experience, some capacitors take well over 80 hours to settle out... ELNA Silmic II's taking the longest that I've heard, through changes in tone and presentation. I wouldn't be surprised if the UDA-1 was using them.

I'll have to check it out and see how it sounds, thanks for the impressions.

Makes sense. I have noticed most bigger amps do tend to change quite dramatically over time. Here is what the UDA-1 uses as it's main audio capacitors, from my brief research seem to be custom by Nippon Chemi Con and only used by Sony. Only information I can find on the internals, it's in Japanese though but has pictures and the text can be translated by google translate.

All this talk of capacitors has me reaching for another glass of wine

Interesting reading by the way to explain why the sound of a SS amp would change over time.
