Yes, it got so-so reviews back in the day but still one of my favorite.

Can anyone let me know where the HD800 Appreciation/Impression thread is?

I was reading the longest thread - "The Sennheiser HD 800: The First Listen, The First Review", but most discussion in it occurred like 5 years ago. Only the last couple of pages are up to date.

Cool, thanks a lot

No wonder I couldn't find it. It's hidden outside the Headphones sub-forum.

What's the digital interface for? My musician friends use it for their ADC (analog digital conveter) since they do recordings.

Another digital interface would be to convert a digital connection to a different connection - like USB to Coaxial when their DAC only supports Coaxial input and no USB.

Thanks, so basically unnecessary with my Modi which has optical, coax and usb.

I really need to make a decision now guys.  Project Starlight, Project Sunrise III or Project Solstice?  Want a good tube amp for my 650 and for future headphones.

Leaning toward Sunrise III, but would like some input on differences, good or bad.

EDIT:  Unrelated to tubes, but how much of an upgrade would this setup be from my current Uber stack? Link

Any amp will drive them, but they pair very well with the Valhalla 2 (from my experience). I have also heard them from an Asgard 2 and they sounded good, but lacked a certain finesse that the OTL amps bring. You can also look at a bottlehead crack as that is also a wonderful pairing with the 650's, as so, so many have pointed out in the past. Just pick something and run with it... just make sure it has enough voltage swing to drive the 650's and you will be in heaven.

Thanks for the input I will definetly have a look at the Valhalla 2. I'm also eyeing the Little Dot MKIII....

In my hands, 650 is nearly perfect as a soothing HP at the end of a long day in my lab.  Not neutral at all. I like it that way. No "veil", either, once properly amped. For rock, brass, and vocals, few do it better. I lose myself in the music, and don't worry about "monitoring" the sound and listening for tiny little flaws.

cheers

What causes the veil? The Shure SE846 is darker than the HD650, yet the Shure SE846 has far greater clarity despite being a darker earphone. Is my Chord Hugo not driving the HD650 properly?

I think the so called veil, which I haven't experienced may actually be part of the 650's sound sig. I believe most enjoy their sound and some who experience this phenomena don't.

I have only had my HD650 for a few hours, but it's definetly something I noticed in comparison to my other headphones.

So far, it does what I bought them for very good. It handles old and bad recorded music pretty good.

IEMs will always present the microdetails better than headphones since they sit right next to your eardrum.

I've said this before & I'll say it again. I don't believe there is a veil in current production HD 650's. I believe every other headphone I've heard is overly emphasized in the treble so as to present the illusion of enhanced detail.
