  Do these headphones hold up well over time? I tried a set in a HiFi store and they had a little buzz at some low frequencies. I also bought a set of HD600 that sound almost like they are blown at some low frequencies. I read the thread about hairs getting through the foam and am hoping that was the case at the HiFi store, and hoping the HD600 I got online was due to previous use before being retuned to the store and sold to me.
 
I am totally hooked on Sennheiser - The HD650's just seem to nail clarity at every frequency like no other can. They might color the sound a bit more but you can hear everything so well. Even with the 600's I am hearing things in my music that I've never heard before, even with the Beyer DT880's I've got here sampling as well.
 
But I am a little put-off by the buzz at the store in the HD650 and how easy it is to seemingly over drive the speakers (with my digital piano's lowest 5-7 notes) to distortion.
 
Any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated. I would like to send back the HD600 and get the 650's as they are my favorite, but I am hesitant to spend $350-$400 and hear buzzes or rattles.

I have a previous generation HD650, second hand, and it's running fine without buzzes. The only ones that happen are either from my amps running low on battery, or completely crappy sound files.

 It maybe cause by the amp My BravoAudio Ocean can create nasty unwanted noise in loud volume Buzzing,Harsh/Driver rattling but then i'am not engineer so i could be wrong i'm just a music lover.

If the lowest notes on your piano are tuned for the lowest frequencies and you're trying to generate an amplitude similar to reproducing, say, the mids, this is extremely stressful on the drivers as well as the accompanying amplifier. Just something to consider. Good luck.

Cracked and went for a second hand LCD-3 Fazor. Whenever it arrives and I have a chance to listen, I'll give thoughts vs the HD-650. Have only heard the LCD 2.2 and it sounded much different than the 650's.

I thought differently. The LCD 2.2 were almost like the HD650 especially with the stock cable...

OK, thanks for that. It's amazing how widely opinions vary on the HD-700s, especially from 650 owners (past or present). I really want a detail can with a big sound stage for low-volume listening of classical strings; I'm just not spending $1,500.00 US on the HD-800. I've thought about adding the Beyer T1, but I've never had the opportunity to audition a pair, unlike the 800s and 700s.

You should consider HE-560. They are incredibly detailed, have a great soundstage, and excel at imaging. For strings they are scary real.

Thanks for your thoughts. I had a chance to listen to a set of HE-560s at a meet; liked them. I also spent some time with the HD-800s at the same meet. In the end, I decided on the HD-700. I posted my impressions in the 700 thread and I am impressed with how well they handle strings, which is where I really wanted round out what the 650s do for me / my ears.
 
The HEs were very detailed, you are correct about that, but the sound was too in-your-face for my tastes (I must be getting old). The follow Head-Fi'er letting me listen to his rig mentioned that those cans work really well with lots of power - so I kept turning up the volume, more and more (a Schiit Ragnarok). I can see why that combo would be so addicting, but I felt like I would be deaf in 6 months if I owned that combo

Gotchya. They have a 4-6 kHz peak. I have not heard the Rag but Schiit amps tend to be forward and aggressive. Not sure if that played a part either, but I am glad the HD 700s worked for you.

Probably... I tend to like a more laid-back sound, as indicated, I guess, by my choice in a Rega DAC + OTL tube amp.
 
That said, when I really want high-energy listening, I will plug-in the Grados into a SS amp and crank it, so I need to give a set of planars a chance, some day. It's just that I don't do this as often as I used to...
