Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

  Sound voodoo. Lol

I've long learned AKGs are weird, so I guess it's just a trait of the brand, sadly they are a pain to get sound their best in my experience. The Senn HD 600/650 are much easier to work with in my experience. The HD 650 is a fantastic headphone to first delve into audiophile grade headphones with, it's easy to get to sound good and sounds pleasing, natural, and relaxing.

Good to know! The Q701s can be had for around $120-$150 which is very tempting. At that price I can get something like an O2+ODAC combo.

True, I personally feel mixed about the K701, K702, and Q701 due to brightness and mixed feelings about their soundstage presentation. I only really like the K712, K7XX, and K702 Anniversary. But I'm not a fan of bright headphones. I'm not sure what your preference of sound is. I think the HD 600/650 may be a better choice to start with.

Oh thanks, so the lower ohm rating the easier to drive. Good to know! I might be able to just get a dac/amp right away I suppose but I'll probably opt to waiting for more money to come in before going completely crazy and spending around $600-$700 on gear. Lol Would you say the HD650 is a good headphone for a lot of genres?

Bonus talk:

Hey guess what "sounds good to me"?
650's shine with most everything I've thrown at them. They are that good IMO.

This doesn't make the choice easy. It looks like it'll be the HD650, HE400i, and possibly this Massdrop version of the K7.

What is a reference sound? My preference in music?

Just a heads up. If you're thinking about the 400i, they retail for $499.00. You can get the he-500 for the same price on amazon. I have those and are very nice. Decisions, decisions!

Don't forget the classifieds if you don't mind used!

To be honest not really sure, especially since the sensitivity of the K7xx series is higher than that of the HD 650, unless the sensitivity is measured differently.

Relative to HD650 the Q701 need around 1.5 times the voltage and 12 times the power to get to the same sound level according to actual measurement (innerfidelity).

I have noticed that on Innerfidelity. Driving the K7 series is like driving the pre-fazor LCD-2 rev 2 it seems by looking at innerfidelity's measurements. Treat them like hard to drive orthos and they seem to sing. My K712 for instance didn't start sounding great until I got them hooked up to the Lyr 2. The HD 650 just seems to need a good amount of voltage swing to get going, they don't really need a lot of current. Then there is the K240 Sextett, which is even more current and voltage hungry than the K7 series and is 600 ohms, my Lyr 2 isn't up to the task, it must take one beastly amp to get those going.

Someone mentioned on another thread that for the price of the HE400i new I can have the HD650, Schiit Modi and Schiit Vali amp. Has anyone have any experience with the Schiit Modi and Vali with their HD650? Seems like a winner off the bat and lots of info on Schiit. Very interesting name btw! haha

Can't speak for the Modi but the Vali has a small soundstage. The hd650 isn't great in the soundstage dept as it is so any lessening via amp might make it a bad combo in that sense. However I never tried them together so keep that in mind. Maybe someone who's tried it can chime in, I'd like to know as well. :)
