Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

well I am now the proud owner of the HD650!  Picked it up from a great seller in my area for an amazing price.  They were used very little and looked brand new.

Running them off of the M-Stage for right now but will be building a Crack + SB in the next few months.

One question:  The right earcup swivel is much looser than the left.  The left one takes a bit of effort to adjust but the right moves very easily.  Not a big issue since it doesn't move once it is on your head anyways but is there a way to tighten it?  I've read this mentioned elsewhere but must have missed how to fix it.

Bump...anyone have any suggestions?

I see you own the HD650's and the 600's, is there an actual big difference between them? So much debate about this.

Yes the difference is definitely there. I have a hard time with the HD600's. On some recordings they literally hurt me. They have an incredible top end, and on the right recordings they can bring me much pleasure. Whereas the 650, is just sublime in all respects. I just love them.

The Q701 has the same effect to me. Piercing top end which is actually painful to me. I can EQ it out but then some of their magic is lost. I think that if you only audition for 10 minutes nobody would opt for the 650's but after an hour most would be thankful for the more sophisticated treble of the 650.

The same... I hated my Q701s. At first they sounded nice but after 30 mins I always had pain in my ears. So I sold them. I have no such problem with HD650s. I just wish Sennheiser released HD850s with HD800s' imaging, soundstage, transparency and HD650s' relaxed presentation.

+1 for that. Priced more reasonably would be a nice bonus too.

In other news - I'd really like to buy a Crack/SB but it's not going to happen so I'm now looking at a Valhalla 2. Has anyone got any experience of it yet with the 650's?

The HD650's are currently going for £248 on Amazon right now. That's a steal!

The Valhalla 2 is a safe bet. Schiit makes really nice products. That being said, I'd still go for the crack/SB.

What would be my weakest link in the chain?

pc lossless, cd or spotify -> odac or udac3 -> vali, o2 -> hd650

I realize these are all entry level gear, but i got worried because i couldnt tell a difference between any of those in a blind test. For examble I compared odac + o2/vali to my cheap lenovo S6000H tablet and desktop pc which uses cheap motherboard with alc892 audio chip. Couldnt tell a darn difference after matching volume and doing a ABX test. I used ~1000 kbps flac files for testing. I dont see anything wrong with my chain but im trying to confirm that so i can start selling my stuff. Im really new to the headphone game, started early this year and ive gone through most of the popular mid-fi phones in here. No regrets as ive found my perfect headphones, except now i feel like ive been fooled into thinking that hd650 for example sounds really bad without proper amp. And let me be clear, im not saying there arent any differences, though they are small enough for me not being able to tell a difference. That is why i feel like ive been mislead into thinking there would be a night n day difference.

Also i might be willing to try more expensive gear if they really improve over those i already have? Would it be a waste for me to even try if i wasnt able to tell difference between those mentioned above? I have he-500 and dt770 too but i havent got into testing those yet, i will do tests this weekend.

Ok. Just bought 2 pairs of the 6hm5 driver tubes, and they sound totally amazing with my hd650's, and I can't complain. The best thing about the hd650's is that with every upgrade, they only get better. And I don't think that would be true with the he-500's, because I own the he-400, and every upgrade I made to my system, never changed my he-400 for the better. IMHO :)

Has anyone compared the Crack+Speedball with the Beta22 for the HD650? Which one synergizes better?

I have no personal experience of either but everyone & their dog says the Crack/SB is Nirvana.

I'm sure there are plenty of high end amps that pairs better than the Crack, just that they are more expensive and thus much less popular. The Beta22 is a high end DIY amp and said to compare favorably to the best commerical SS amps. It also is said to pair incredibly well with the HD650.
