Well in that case I would definitely recommend the Magni/Modi combo. It is pretty special at the price point.

It would be slightly more expensive than STX, but I hardly see any point having a dedicated sound card nowadays, if it's not a professional audio interface. There may be some (dubious) benefits for hardcore gamers and that's about it.

Totally agree, the dedicated sound card is kinda pointless at this point, unless you are running a surround out of the back of the PC.

Any words yet from owners of the original Valhalla and comparisons with the Valhalla 2?

I'm happy with the way the Valhalla/650s sound, I don't have a need for lower Z switch or preamp as I don't use IEMs with it (only my 650s actually) and am satisfied with my current SS pre/amp setup for my speakers. I have noticed a bit of noise from the Valhalla from time to time (I've owned cheaper tube amps and they've all had a degree of noise).

I would be interested in upgrading to the Valhalla 2 if the sound hasn't changed and if the noise issue is gone (does it use the same tubes Schiit sells for the Valhalla?)

From what I heard, it would rather be a sidestep than a step-up. However, some people claim otherwise.

Listening to the HD800 right now.

Put me in the group that claim otherwise

Far from a side step.

Nice grab.  I got mine in December from Best Buy price matched to Amazon for $425.  I saw them at 404 the other day.  Today I have seen them at 499 and 469.  Such crazy swings with this one!

Newb question: How's the stock cable? I was considering ordering a Norne Audio cable (to match my other two headphones). Does the HD650 benefit from a silver cable due to it's alleged darker signature? How're the aesthetics?
