Also open box on ebay with 30 day guarantee for $375, but for $14 and taxes Amazon's a better deal. Decided to get a 2nd pair and give my newly acquired used pair to my husband for Christmas. I got a balanced cable 2.5mm for $50 to use with my Fiio and sounds as good as stock that I can tell. Also far more lightweight and less annoying.

HD 700 + LG V40 + = the most enjoyment I've ever had listening to music!
My HD700's arrived today. I'm currently running them on the Gilmore Lite Mk2 with the Hugo 2 performing DAC duties. Straight out of the box they sound better than the HD660S and HD650 that I've owned. But as of now they sound a little closed in. Do the HD700's open up over time? Also it seems like the cable is limiting the sound. I think a different cable would serve them well. What are some good cable recommendation that would improve attack and dynamics?

The original cable costs 99$ at Sennheiser.
For comparison: the hd600 cable costs 9.5$
I can't imagine that the cable is limiting the sounds.
It even should be better than any 30$ aftermarket cable.

the only thing wrong with the original cable is that its a bit stiff and keeps kinking up, for me at least. As for sound quality, I've yet to hear a cable make a difference unless it was bad/defective in some way.My HD700's arrived today. hey mate.. yes they open up within time, but not as much tho. if you wanna open em up and get a massive sound-stage without adding color to the overall sound sig.
1) Download Equalizer APO to your Mac/Windows
2) go to your installed path ( mine is C/Program Files)
3) There will be a sub-folder called config , double click on it
4)then there will be a txt file called "config"
5) double click on it and clear whatever written inside of it and save it
6) then double click again and copy paste these values and hit save.

by doing so you will clear up the clogged upper registries and scale up sound stage at least by a good 30-40% . and you will manage to bring up the lost micro details back to life. its a day & night difference. if you feel like you need a bit of an extra thump try this config

I made a cable out of Mogami 2534 and some decent connectors using kester lead solder, shorter and sound more nuetral than stock , stock sound darker with recessed mid to me. Mogami 2534 and 2893 really improved the overall neutrality of all 3 sennheiser I tried (Hd600, hd700, ie8)The original cable costs 99$ at Sennheiser.
For comparison: the hd600 cable costs 9.5$
I can't imagine that the cable is limiting the sounds.

I am finding myself untangling it when I want to get a listen to them. But I'm going to give them some time to open up. Hopefully after I log more hours on them there will be some sound improvements.the only thing wrong with the original cable is that its a bit stiff and keeps kinking up, for me at least. As for sound quality, I've yet to hear a cable make a difference unless it was bad/defective in some way.

I purchased a (relatively) cheap Chinese cable off of Amazon. Works well for me. The one I got was a slightly longer version of this:

Thanks @Sylaw what you just describe is exactly what I'm hearing in the upper registries. Things seems a bit muddy right now and I want to open up the sound and let more details through. I'm finding if I play my music at a decent volume the HD700 sound better. But low volume listening is not the best with these headphones. I already downloaded the Equalizer APO. Now I just need to figure out how to setup it up and use the settings you have provided.hey mate.. yes they open up within time, but not as much tho. if you wanna open em up and get a massive sound-stage without adding color to the overall sound sig.

Thanks, I'll look into this. But it looks like I may need to EQ some frequencies to get my desired sound.I purchased a (relatively) cheap Chinese cable off of Amazon. Works well for me. The one I got was a slightly longer version of this:

Like @Sylaw suggested, get Equalizer APO set up for EQ. I have that and control it via Peace64 and it does wonders. Thanks, I'll look into this. But it looks like I may need to EQ some frequencies to get my desired sound.
Hmm, I find the soundstage on the HD700 to be very wide.....

After EQIng?Hmm, I find the soundstage on the HD700 to be very wide.....
After EQIng?
No, I don't use eq.
I think that the K712/Q701 and HD800S are the only headphones that I own with a wider stage.
