Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

Back to my S2's this week and I am really enjoying them. Just to change things up I pulled my Liquid Spark out of the 2nd bedroom/home office and it sounds pretty good on its own.
Comparing head to head with the iFi Pro iCAN, predictably, did not go well. There is a Wide price gap between the two.

Next up I compared my little Spark to the Schiit Valhalla 2 and I preferred Valhalla 2, but by a much more narrow margin.

I still believe that the Spark is a HUGE value at the entry point into our hobby. But it will likely be making its way back to the second bedroom soon.

Getting back to the thread subject, I am even higher on these headphones since my little de-foaming mod. These are not that far away from my beloved Clear's.

I can't wait to get my Violectric amp back from Germany! Dying to hear these 'phones on it. As others have said, they really do scale wonderfully.

It's interesting that the HD660s2 is not only sensitive to which Amp you use but also the dac. It sounds terrific with the JDS Element lll Mk2 Dac/Amp.
Then I pared it with the Lake People G111 Amp, using the Element lll Mk2 as the Dac, and wow that Amp really makes it more dynamic the low end really came forward and clear and the high end was actually less piercing. Then I paired the Lake People G111 with a JDS EL Dac ll that uses a AKM 4493 Dac ship instead of ESS used on the Element lll. The headphone all of a sudden sounded flat, I lost the dynamic sound and just didn't sound the same.
Switch it back to the Lake People G111 and Element lll with the ESS DAC and Dynamics and smooth sound back. I'm happy with my pairing.

Im enjoying the Lake People G111 so much I thinking of selling it to buy the G111 v2
The right amp does make a difference.
The G111 MKII is an excellent amp, it's what I use with my HD 660S2. Sadly never heard the MKI so can't say how it compares to the MKII. I also like how they have dual full-power headphone outputs, I usually have two headphones connected at once. Been comparing the HD 660S2 with the R70x lately.

I just picked up the G111 Mkll on Amazon for $420, which is a very good price, best I have seen, usually $600.

This made me curious. But there are there any nice ampa under 1k that beats the k7?
JDS Element II+ Stack.
I jumped from JDS Atom -> FiiO K7 Pro -> Topping L30 -> JDS EL II+ Stack.

In short: The JDS Atom and HD660S2 was a bit shouty. K7 Pro was alright but didn't have the clarity of the Atom. L30 lacked a bit of treble definition compared to the JDS Atom. EL II+ has a smidge more clarity in the midrange than the K7 and didn't have the shoutiness from the JDS Atom.

Regarding HD660S2 quirks, it would be that the upper bass does touch the lower mids, so there's a thickness that's present with vocals. The second thing is that the HD660S2 has an upper mid peak at 5khz-ish that can get in the way with intense vocals. Paired with the EL II+, my ears easily adjusted to the HD660S2 a lot easier compared to when paired with prior mentioned sources.

I've essentially strapped my stack to my PC, as I find they're the perfect pairing for the HD660S2. I honestly never though the HD660S2 would change with sources unlike my HD600, but it does.

Very curious about the ZMF Homage in terms of new amps that play well with high ohm cans. I think the intro sale price may be over but it’s right above $1k, like the Mj3. The internet is buzzzing about the Aune S10, which is well below 1k, but I wonder about longevity with that piece. Also Cayin just announced a new solid state amp and tube amp but no idea on pricing.
