Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

Finally I got my HD660S2 delivered. I tried them first at my workplace with xDSD Gryphon (4.4mm balanced) and compared them to my HD660S. S2 was better but I still felt a bit disappointed. There was increase in treble presence and mid bass but especially sub bass quality was not there.

Later today I tried HD660S, HD660S2 and HD800S with my HDV820. Just Wow! I was not expecting how good these S2 sound and how much they scale. And the sub bass... it is there and sounds really good. No need to EQ with these. Too early to make any comparison but I have a feeling that these are not going anywhere in many many years. I will give 660S to my son.

This was an interesting review of the HDV820. It pretty much is in line with my experience when pairing with some of my headphones including HD660 S2.

This was an interesting review of the HDV820.
I've a HDVD800, similar in amplification and yes impedance matching comes into play, while fine with the HD800S and S2 my AKG K872 36 ohm are much better served with the Bryston BHA1 or the little SMSL HO100 at almost 0 impedance which supply more current on lower impedance headphones.
But power and impedance is not everything and designers go to great lengths in trying to get the final electrical signal that that powers the drivers translated into what we perceive as a musically accepted performance from very complex waveforms.

I found this video clearer on the explanation...

Just to add that the biggest complaint against the Senn amps is that due to the higher impedance output they are less versatile than similar and cheaper priced units, still IMHO a fine sounding solid state.

I think it's more due to it's increased intimacy combined with the extra bass energy and dynamics. But I think the main culprit is something in my system chain.
Neither 660S and S2 is fatiguing for me, but I do find the S easier for speech. I spend hours on vtubers every day so I pay a lot of attention to the balance of voice. I find the bass on S2 is closer and more forward than 660S, so some male vtubers sound a little booming to me. I don't plan to keep both, still trying to figure that out.

It was informative but on that video he basically said any coloration of the sound is bad. That is totally different viewpoint than on the other video. I like how the HDV820 colors the sound even with my 80 ohm Utopia 2022.

Preferences aside I felt the explanation was clearer with regards to impedance matching, our perception and interpretation of what comes out as music from an electrical mechanical device is way more complicated. :sunglasses:

Speaking of music, quite enjoyed digging up XTC this morning.

I have a growing interest in Jazz but have zero books to review. Of all your Jazz related books which would you recommend as the first one I should read? Appreciate the tip!
