Sennheiser HD 650 vs HD 600

I bought HD650's for 349e. Listened to HD600's too, but.. I had the money, so bought the newer model. At least there's the psychological factor.. even if they are otherwise about the same.

Well, HD650's are definitely better than my old HD570. Can't complain

I sent my HD600 back and got the 650. They are well worth the price difference IMO. Even with my relatively modest setup (Sony vintage PCDP -> magwires naked -> XP-7 -> stock cable -> HD650) the differences were quite significant to me. Much much better & more refined bass extension, a more forward midrange and no humps at certain frequencies (that I noticed with the 600s). The highs are a bit softer (compared to the 600s) but still very very detailed and enjoyable. Overall, I love the 650 and would highly recommend them.

RME?

I know an Audigy 2 is bad BUT:

1. I'm listening to alt-preset extreme LAME mp3s
2. I'm using the kx drivers, not creative's drivers
3. I'm using Foobar 2000 with:
a. resampling to 48khz
b. upsampling to 24bit
c. kernel streaming

So how bad is the audigy 2 under these conditions? I know that the kx drivers and kernel streaming definitely improve it a bit. Has anybody compared an audigy 2 under these conditions to an non-gaming card ?

Looks like I have to try the HD 650.

Sennheiser say that the sound of the HD 650 is:

* Exceptionally natural, spatial and accurate sound
* Suitable for all types of music
* Balanced, contoured bass
* Real deep bass reproduction
* Exceedingly authentic voice reproduction
* Unobtrusive, natural strings and wind instruments
* Pleasantly natural trebles
* Silvery, clear cymbals

Would you agree?

The HD580/600/650's truly shine when it comes to classical music, so their claims about strings, winds, cymbals, etc. are on target. And in comparison to the 600's, the HD650's does have a much deeper bass.
