Sennheiser HD 650 vs HD 600
Feb 18, 2004 at 10:01 PM Post #16 of 35
Another vote for 650 over the 600's. The difference is more than worth the price differential - especially when you can get 650's for $350 from time to time when Audio Advisor runs a special (like right now, use Coupon Code HPSALE75).

To me the 650's biggest improvements are deeper, even more controlled bass, much flatter response over the whole frequency range, and a bigger soundstage.

I agree with those who state that the 600 -> 650 difference is much greater than the 600 + Zu (or other) cable improvement. Raul - I agree with your idea of auditioning the cables before laying down hard earned cash for them.

Just my $0.02 worth

edit: Just noticed the last question on the poll (some other headphone is better). In response to that, my take is that, yes, there are better headphones than the 650, but they cost at least 4 times as much - I'm thinking AT L3000, Sony R10, STAX Omega II, and Sennheiser Orpheus here. I own L3000's and R10's, and Yes they are better, but not 4 - 5 times better - more like 10 - 20% better, at most. The 650's are as good as it gets for less than $2k, imho, although many Sony cd3k, AKG K1000, Beyer DT880, etc owners will disagree.

What do you classify as "bad gear"?

I'm asking this because I have an audigy 2(kx drivers, foobar 2000 w/ kernel streaming), a meta42, and I have some HD650's on backorder from AudioAdvisor.com, to replace my HD580's.

chalk another one up for the 650. if you even remotely like the Senn 600 sound, you'll most likely love, even more, the 650 sound.
i can closely relate to Jazz's views about the Senn 650.
when i bought the 600's or any other phones for that matter(ety's excluded), i always noticed that one small con...that one small part of the spectrum that i thought could be presented a bit better. but with the 650's, i have ZERO gripes, zero problems with any part of the spectrum with every genre of music i own. imo, everything is simply done perfect...and maybe this is because i haven't heard the Omega II or the R10, but who cares! what i can't get over is how great the high frequencies sound with the Zu's. if you pick an artist that is always known for making that really harsh "ssss" sound after certain words...the 650's w/Zu lets you know how high pitch that "ssss" sound can be, but without any harshness or sibilance whatsoever.

you can also think of it this way...
the 650's can make that sound coming from finger nails scratching a chalk board sound good without being harsh...well, not good, but you know what i mean

i really can't describe it beyond that. one obviously must truely hear it to experience it

and yet another vote for the hd650 over the hd600.
i had the hd600/cardas setup and sold it rather quickly after i heard the new hd650 was on it's way. the hd650 is clearly the better phone. sometimes with pop or rock, the bass can be a bit boomy. but i guess it is all up to finetuning the setup.

i am also looking for an aftermarket cable; thus far the two best cables are in my opinion the zu mobius and the silver dragon.

in my setup it seems that the hd650 has a little more synargy then the hd 600.

Another member of the herd here, I like the 650 best. I also think the 650 is a different sounding phone than the 600. The 650 is less congested sounding and has better midrange presence.

I just purchased my HD 650s from HR. This is my first set of real headphones (cans) and I am very excited about using them. I'd like to learn more about the Zu or Cardas cable for the 650. Where is the best place to learn about these cables?

Thanks,

Matthew

HeadRoom says that you need a decently good setup to really get a difference between the hd580/600 and the hd650's. You might want to keep that in mind.

That said, the thought of not having the best senn's I could really bothered me so I sprung for the
