I'm hearing you Harley 

.  I'll likely sell the SRH1840 when I get the HD800 (might be another year away).  Eventually I seem myself rebuying the HD600 - but not until I have the HD800.  I see no real point in having both the SRH1840 and HD600 at the same time.
 
I think my stopping point will be:
HD800, HD600 and Alpha Dog.
 
But I think if I had to stay with what I have right now - I'd still be perfectly happy.
 
SRH 1840 reminds me of a cross between the HD600 and DT880 - but more refined than both.

I now have an environment suited to open 'phone listening. I have HD 429s, E12, Sony e-series DAP and DVD player. Will the 600s give me the same quantity of bass only better ? I know everything else will better. I have Martin Logan SL-3s with 2 Vandersteen subs in my big system so I like the smooth Sennheiser sound with good bass. Do the 600s handle bass boost without breaking up ? My speaker based system sounds great with all kinds of music and I'm hoping the 600's can do this also. Check out The Orb with Lee "scratch" Perry "soul Man !

They can handle lv1 bass boost from my iCan (~4db in the sub-mid bass range) without distortion, but lv3 (~+10db) is pushing it way too much

Thanks Ophiel, I should have mentioned that I opened one hole with the bass mod on my 429's. Stock, they couldn't take any boost and had too little bass for me. I'm not a basshead by any means but if a track is supposed to have strong bass I want to hear it. Do you recommend any mods?

I think some mods had been mentioned in this thread, like taking out the grill, taking out the foam, replacing the foam etc.  but iirc none of them aims to boost the bass further. imo the bass is more than sufficient, and if you like more you can do some eq with your E12. If you don't like the idea of eqing, you might consider than hd650 which are known to have more bass. But personally, I see no need to EQ 99% of the time as the bass impact is satisfying without it

I'm pretty sure your HD600s are fine without a bass mod. There is enough of it.

I find that there's plenty of midbass punch when the track calls for it. Subbass is not as powerful but responds well to EQ (within reason).

Yeah I agree that the bass quantity is perfect already. It's just that many amps, specially tubes, bring out the mids and/or highs more. There are some tubes that are more neutral, but not as common. That is why I think solid state is a better match, why mess with perfection. If you find it light on bass for your tastes, I suggest an amp with a little bass boost, +6db is plenty. On my Fiio E11, I find I loose a bit of airyness and separation when I use it though, but to each his own.

IMO the 600 gives you the amount of bass that's in the recording.  If it's already big, you will hear it big.

I bought my HD600's almost exclusively to listen to my vinyl collection. Man do these phones make electronic music sound heavenly. I'm listening to Tiesto - Kaleidoscope right now with a huge smile on my face. Wish I had more electronic albums on vinyl.

Doh! I sent my HD650 cable to be reterminated with a shorter cord for portable/sitting at desk use but left my stock HD600 cable at home.
 
It will be a long day in the office w/o anything to listen to!

It also works really well with deephouse and progressive house. The often submerged and dreamy bass together with the clean and rich mids of the genre can be superb with the 600 (as long as the recording is decent, which is not that big of a deal in this age).

Another impulse buy I just couldn't resist S.M.S.L SAP III. I currently don't have a solid state desktop amp, and at $65 I just had to . Uses the Texas Instruments OPA2604 and Toshiba A1358, not too shabby. Not very many reviews I could find about this, and relatively incomplete spec's. I will let you guys know how it turns out.
