Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread
Dec 19, 2019 at 2:27 PM Post #20,011 of 23,456
I received the Dragon Fly Red today (with usb c-to-a cable), I installed the android volume upgrade via their app, and now I'm listening to my favourite music (FLAC files on my Samsung A50) through my HD 600. I must honestly say, I really couldn't be much happier right now, what a heavenly sound! I'm pretty sure this will keep me entertained for a while, but after having read a lot about other headphones over the past couple of days, I'm already a bit curious about the HD 650 and HD 660 S. Anyone who has all three 6** models and would like to share impressions?

HD 650 is a bit darker than the HD 600. You can look at frequency response graphs and see the difference. HD 600 has more treble and is pretty much neutral. Not really an "upgrade" but more of a "sidegrade". If you like the HD 600 sound, then the next step up in the Sennheiser line is the HD 800, which is quite the step and quite a bit brighter.

Interesting, how would you say do these compare to the other Sennheisers in that range, like the 650 and (very similar or identical?) 6xx?

Sorry but I am not familiar with other Sennheisers. Many reviews say the HD660S are better, FWIW. Some even rate them higher overall than the 800 series. There is a major thread on the HD660S in these forums.

In terms of fidelity the HD 600/650 and HD 660S are not even close to the HD 800/S. The resolving capabilities of the HD 800 are rather stark coming from the HD 6xx line. Why people may prefer the HD 600/650/660 S over the HD 800/S really comes more down to tuning and sound presentation.

Interesting, I might actually like a slightly darker sound, or perhaps I should get the 660s, as I've read they're kinda the best of both worlds (600 and 650).

What about the 700 series? Happy medium or actually rather disappointing like some people would argue?

Sadly I haven’t really listened to the HD 700 for more than a few minutes and that was years ago so can’t really say anything about them. I’m mostly familiar with the HD 600, HD 650, and HD 660 S as I’ve owned all three. I like all three but the HD 660 S was my favorite as I found it oddly engaging and addicting. I haven’t done a proper comparison of it compared to the HD 600 or HD 650 so can’t say how good exactly it is compared to them.

Fair enough, and I really love hearing that you prefer the 660 S, as I'm seriously considering getting it!

My take on them:
HD 650 the most comforting sound.
HD 660S the most exciting sound.
HD 800S the most impressive sound.
HD 600 The most balanced sound (and my favourite - especially with a full sounding dac plus amp).
Nice overview, I must admit that I love 'exciting' sound, so I'm really considering getting the 660 S now! Don't get me wrong, I love my HD 600, but I do wish it would sound a little more 'exciting'...

I am actually re-trying my HD700s primarily with classical music. I found that they lacked bass for rock or jazz, while I love the HD600s or 6xx (650 equivalent). Right now the 700s seem very good as a neutral headphone for classical and I’m going to give them more chance when I’m in the classical mood. I read on one of these threads that the 700s are no longer listed on the Sennheiser site. The 800s are still top, but I have no experience with them, I suggest you look at the 800 threads. If I were to just have one headphone it would be the 600.

I personally like a bit of liveliness to my headphones so it suited my tastes more. The HD 600/650 are just a bit too soft for all-around usage for my personal tastes, so they work better for me as complimentary headphones. It’s really about what you want out of the sound. Basically with the HD 660 S is if you love the tuning of the HD 600 and HD 650 but want more liveliness then it may be the headphone for you.

The closest I ever get to classical music is the odd Best of Pavarotti collection or my complete Howard Shore Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit collection, both not exactly classical music, I know... The 800 are definitely too expensive for me, so I'd like to stick to the 6** series for now.
