They can be better, worst or the same, this is after having 4 of them, 3 where used for SennGrado builds.  There is a lot of variations in the sound from one to another (see SennGrado thread or "non-grado" driver thread).  If you get a good pair then the resulting SennGrado build will usually be better than HD-598/6xx, if the drivers aren't that good then it might not catch up to HD-6XX.

Amazon has a neat deal of $400 with a $150 gift card included which brings a new HD600 to $250. Almost similar price as used ones.

   Just got my Modi 2 Uber + Vali 2 in the mail yesterday, which I find to be a perfect match to it for my listening tastes.. (Though I do admit being tempted by the Bottlehead Crack due to hearing it's constant praise as an exciting match for the 600)

I'm a Crack head, best amp for HD6XX under $500 IMO, others will say tubes add distortion but to me its more musical, unless you want neutral/natural then I'd say look else where.

I have PX100-II (which I don't even list on my profile) and I'd like to say that we shouldn't underestimate the sound quality of those headphones. It is a little headphone, quite fragile but sounds quite good - but nowhere near as good as HD600. Anyone who thinks that PX100-II sounds on par with HD600 should leave this hobby and check their hearing. PX100-II is grainy throughout the frequency range in comparison. The sound of PX100-II is quite balanced, easy to listen to and forgiving but they lack the transparency, fidelity and naturalness of HD600.

There's a strange human desire to overstate the virtues of something that's cheap. If they're remotely comparable, people will try in earnest to knock down the expensive reference option and boost the cheaper comparable option. In my opinion, people want to think they're smarter for finding a cheaper alternative to something someone paid full pop for.
 
Case in point - Xiaomi Piston 2. Go to that thread. It's a $25 IEM that sounds like a $75 IEM, so people claim it sounds like a $150 IEM. Then, Piston 2 owners go to threads of $100-$200 IEMs and ask people to compare the to the Piston 2. Not because they're interested in buying the IEM they're asking about, they just want proof that their beloved $25 IEM competes.

I'm waiting for my Bottlehead Crack. The wait time is over a month now
 
Currently I'm driving my HD600 with a Fiio E17 and something seems to be off unfortunately. I'm glad the Vali 2 worked out for you.

Frankly, you might have just been unlucky right at the moment when you purchased them. The gift card offer runs fairly frequently, but I've definitely personally checked (even though I have one) when people have talked about it and seen "Currently Unavailable". It's back up to nearly $400? Highest I've seen it in a while, though it's not like I check frequently anyway
