Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

The DT880 is still a typical Beyerdynamic and has the annoying treble spike (the 600ohm less so). If you don't mind that, more power to you, I can't stand it. I agree the DT880 is tighter and the bass is more extended but the treble spike makes it inferior to the HD600.

Actually the 600 ohm has pretty much the same treble spike. And yes, it's annoying. Trouble is, apart from that the 880 is one of the great values and one of the most neutral cans on the market. On acoustic music it can match it with the big boys--once the treble spike is addressed.

Fortunately that spike is at quite a high frequency, making it vulnerable to attack. I use a simple tone control on an integrated amp. Others use more elaborate EQ. Some use warm tube amps, which more masks than addresses the problem. Never mind, whatever works. Of course you can just ignore the 880 altogether, but in that case you'll be ignoring a potential gem, especially if you're into classical or jazz.

I so want a HD600 with angled drivers and better bass extension. It doesn't even need the fancy HD800 driver, it just needs to be a good headphone - something the HD700 isn't.

The HD700 was supposed to be the angled headphone with a HD6x0 level driver ... do not get the HD700 as an upgrade from the HD600, you're going to be sorry. :frowning2:

The HD800 is an upgrade but keep your HD600.

The HD700 is an upgrade to the HD600 in many ways, such as detail, clarity, and soundstage. However, in my opinion the difference is not big enough to justify the cost of the HD700. Also, the HD700 pushes details in your face aggressively in order to give the illusion of lots of detail, whereas actual detail retrieval is only slightly better than the HD600, and far inferior to the HD800. In doing so, the HD700 also sounds quite unnatural, if very "impressive" with its exaggerated clarity upon first listen, and loses the incredible realism that the HD600 is known for.

I agree
But not because HD700 is a bad headphones, to my ears they are doing things better than HD600 but they present music in a very different way.
I had HD600 and I looooved them. Now I'm pretty happy with my HD700.

I consider HE-500 as a good upgrade from HD600, but the problem I had with HE-500 was comfort, otherwise it would be my main headphones.

Just listening to Foxes, Glorious on the 600s. These headphones never fail to sound awesome.

That's why Sennheiser can never bring themselves to discontinue these cans after so many years. People just keep snapping them up.

Oh and I've just purchased the hifiman re-400 iem as I wanted a hd600 sound for out and about. My early impressions are that this is very close in overall signature! Remarkable little iem especially at £80. I highly recommend for anyone that wants a mini hd600 for travel purposes.

Yeah I agree too... The RE400 is pretty much like a IEM version of the HD600...I have the BA200, which has a slightly warmer sound with a slightly larger mid bass hump... I like it's sound signature a lot and I find the same love when I auditioned (and subsequently purchased) the HD600 too

Expect:
Sudden lack of bass quantity
Sudden drop in volume
More neutral sound
Need an amp
Improvement in everything
