Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

Back in the day, 10+ years ago, the HD600 was praised to the heavens when mated with tubes. I don't read much about that today. Is it because most users today have an aversion to tube amps or what? To those who haven't heard their HD600's with tubes, I would highly recommend checking it out!

Because before 2003 there was no HD650

. And typical tube flavor is to warm up the sound , more bass body ,  tame the highs etc

(yeah i know that some tube design sound like very neutral SS amps , and vice versa , just wondering

) .

Yeah people still rave about the HD600 + tube amps, specifically the Crack. I plan on building one soon. Really looking forward to it.

The crack is a no brainer.  its not that expensive, and you can find them used for even less.  But the performance/cost ratio is fantastic.  you really get your moneys worth in the crack.

although your Lake People amp might work pretty nicely as well.

Yeah the G109 doesn't leave alot to be desired as far as SS amps go but I'd love to hear the HD600's with some tubes. I was thinking about getting a Little Dot or a Woo but I've decided on building a Crack. Can't wait to hear what everyone has been clamoring on about.

devhen.. as you may well remember, I owned the G109 quite some time back (and loved it).. I've owned the (speedballed) Crack for quite some time, too (along with the HD600).. if you like the G109, you'll love the (speedballed) Crack w/ the HD600.

what tubes are you running?  I'm at that point

I've got a number of 12AU7, 12BH7, 6SN7, and 6F8G tubes (the 6SN7 & 6F8G require adapters.. which I ordered off eBay) for the input.  In the output position, I swap between the Tung Sol 5998 and a Bendix 6080 (w/ slotted graphite plates).  It's hard for me to pick an outright favorite.  I really like the Amperex PQ 6085 right now.. The Mazda CIFTE 12AU7 is a terrific tube if you listen to electronica/hip hop/very rhythmic music.

I made a terrible mistake today
This morning I was waiting for my commuter bus, the last one for my office and it didn't arrive and man it was freezing. Well I had a ticket for another bus to my old office, which is still mine and has my name on it, the location is across the street from J&R Music World. So around lunchtime before jumping on the PATH to cross the river to my new office, I decided to lob into J&R. I happened to have my Portable DAC and Portable amp with me, so all the better. While there I listened again to the HD700 and reconfirmed my previous experience with them, a bit too bright compared to my HD600's. Then I listened to the HD650's and again as compared to my HD600's a tad too dull in the treble department, the bass was nice but I still prefer the HD600's.  Then I made my mistake, listening to the HD800, damn I want one. And contrary to popular belief, these are much easier to drive than people make them out to be, they are quite sensitive for 300 Ohm cans, more sensitive than the HD600's, 5 db/mW more sensitive. If you make the voltage swing these babies can sing.
Well right now I'm listening to my HD600's and however impressed I am by the HD800's, they're not $900 better. And yes, I am happy listening to my HD600's, only my ears have been bitten by the bug. I think all hope is lost, I think that I'll start putting something ($$$) aside.

If you are anything like me, over the next few days or weeks, you will come to the conclusion that in the scheme of things, $900 really isnt that much money, and you only live once, and it's actually a smart decision because its the last headphone you will ever need, and Crutchfield sells factor warranted refurbs for only $1100, and.....

has anyone had any experience with Bellari HA540 or a Ray Samuels? (SR-71a, Hornet, Predator amp/dac), I've heard very nice things on the synergy with HD600/650.

I have the hornet, and it does very well with the 600.  Ray voiced it with the 600.  His newer amps are a little better, but more expensive.

I have the SR-71A  and it's a beautiful match.  Supposedly Ray designed it with the HD's in mind.  Tons of power and a black background.
