Is that insert absolutely necessary, or is it just cosmetic? The Sennheiser logo/text on my headband is really worn and looks weird, but the headband assembly costs more than the drivers, so I don't think I'll be replacing it just for cosmetic reasons.
I don't plan on getting a too expensive amp, maybe around 100-150$ on it and I listen to a variety of music that isn't bass heavy but usually higher vocals or neutrals. And I generally listen to aac files.

I'd get the highest quality files you can (Lossless), but unless you're running w/ a lot of 128kbps, I'd recommend the HD600 with a JDS Labs Objective2, Schiit Magni or Fiio E09K. You can't go wrong!

From what I can tell it's sole purpose, aside from stating where the phones are made, is to keep the headband cushion securely in place so it doesn't slide around.

Not that necessary, it's just the headband padding slides in there without anything holding it on one side. And I'm of a nitpicking type, always annoying when something is "missing".
I remember my cat was playing with that thing, I had no clue what was it and just binned it into the trash can...Only after couple months I've noticed that it was in fact that plastic insert... LOL.
I know exactly how you feel. I did something similar recently, but a tad more annoying. I copied over my entire music collection (over 100GB) to my new iMac iTunes library. And since iTunes makes it's own copy on import, I went ahead and deleted the original local copy. In doing so I didn't realize I had the whole iTunes folder selected also. Of course I didn't realize that until I had emptied the trash.
