Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread

Hmmm... good to know that i can run it un amped. But good to know that I have options and can try out. So what kind of amp should I be looking at to drive it?

I think it's fine unamped, but if you really wanted some extra juice. Any amp with coloration towards the low end helps balance these out perfectly.

There's a fair amount of good options, just depends on what your wanting to spend???

FiiO E11 or E12 would work, I think quite nicely. I have the E11. It seems to work for some of my really big cans with 36 ohms and 50mm drivers... I think that the E11 puts out like 70 mW for the HD 598's, because of their 60 ohms impedance. Should be good.

Interesting, I thought all headphoones always benefited from some amplification. I'll wait till I get my hands on the headphones then :)

See two post above yours and that's the answer for your question. They don't necessarily need amping but can benefit from amping. Try them out first and decide later about adding an amp.

Not all headphones benefits from amping :) Sometimes, amping is used to amend the sound slightly while some other time, we use it to give more power. Sometimes, more power result in better sound but not always. IMO there are also time where pairing with an amp is not at all necessary. Then again, sometimes EQ is more than enough rather than getting a specific amp which add the sound signature you like

Why are the HD 595's 200$+ more? Isn't the 598's better in all or most aspects?

Who would pay 500$ for 595's when the 598's are clearly the better choice"

Under the assumption that you have no DAC, getting a DAC/Amp combo (i.e. FiiO E10, FiiO E07K, all that Schitt stuff, etc.) would probably be your best bet. Unless of course you only plan to use a mobile device (i.e. iPod, Zune, etc.). Just running straight from your computer's onboard to an amp is only going to contribute to noise.

As a panda once told me. Junk in, amplified junk out.

That depends on the listener. And they aren't $500 quite yet... Only about $330 (Amazon)... That's a little bit too much of an exaggeration.

Thanks for all the replies :)

Anyway, I am running an Audio Technica AD700 to the desktop mainly with Xonar DGX, and it does sound better with a Fiio E6 amp. I am assuming getting a substantially better DAC will cost me a lot more. I was looking into getting a desktop amp after the headphones, perhaps something like the Fiio E09k (which has pre amp), or the O2 amp.

Go look it up. The 595's cost 478$ on amazon. Seriously, no joke. It says it at the bottom of here in the "Gear Mentioned In This Thread" section. It says exactly 478$ for the Sennheiser HD 595.

I would argue that I loved the HD598s coming out of my onboard. But that's just me.
