Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread

I hear a lot of people complaining about the (lack of) bass on the HD 598's. Would you care to play the first 40 seconds of this video for me? (On the HD 598's!) Thanks! (Use decent volume but not extremly loud, your normal listening level should be fine).

This dumb song is nothing but bass: http://i-am-kind-of-strange.tumblr.com/post/24066951330/mooseismydog-if-you-listen-to-this-you-will-be

it's a spoof song by Linkin Park. Test bass on any headphone with that sucker.

Anyone use the HD 598's with an Audioengine D1 DAC/headphone amp? The headphone output impedance is 10 ohms. I've been using a D1 for my Audioengine A2/AS8 speakers. I just ordered the HD 598's and I'm wondering how well this combo is going to work.

Not too well. It might work adequately, but it's not reccomended to use something with that high of an output impedance. Sennheiser's headphones are designed for <2 ohm amps.

What are some recommended amps to use with these that are <2 ohms? I didn't buy the D1 for the headphone amp so I'm open to buying a dedicated headphone amp for < $250. I would still use the DAC from the D1.

Hi, I just want to ask two questions. Is Sennheiser HD 598 laid-back or forward? What are the laid-back and forward in Audiophile? Sorry, because I just entered audiophile one month ago and do not know about technical terminology.

Are the 598s good for movies ?.  I had the HD 558s, and they lack bass, i took them back, do the 598s have a better bass sound ?

The 598 is less bassy than the 558.

Laid-back/forward usually refers to the treble I believe. The 598 would definitely be forward.

Just to throw in a comment even though I own better phones, my mom's husband owns a pair of 598s based on my reccomendation and he got them awhile ago through Crutchfield for $200 and free shipping which is a good price for them. For the price they are terrific phones and have very nice mids. Are they as good as the 600s or have near the same soundstage? No. But for those on a budget the 598s look and sound very nice for the price. I'm a fan of Sennheiser phones (wasn't always though but my sonic preferences changed over the years towards more natural tonality and now Sennheiser is my brand of choice). I wouldn't mind having the 598s as a travel phone or as a mid-tiered phone for a budget system.

I have a pair of 650s and 800s though, and use them piggybacked (650s over 800s cups, amazing!), and of course they are both excellent as individual phones, too.

Doubt the 598 would be considered a good travel phone though. Leaks wayyy too much.

I don't care. That's the other people's problem, not mine. For once in their lives it might actually do them some good to listen to good music instead of that garbage they listen to now-a-days anyway. :D
