I recently replaced the degraded foam inserts within the earpads and headband of my HD-580 headphones.   Total cost, less than US$2. (Replacement earpads cost a shocking equivalent of US $90 in the UK)

I couldn't find any similar DIY instructions so I documented my own procedure.  The two links below were originally posted on avforums.com

Thank you so much!  I just did this to fix the headband in my HD580's and it worked perfectly.

They're so comfortable now - probably even better than when they were new.  The original padding had gotten to the point where my head would almost rub on the plastic of the band, so I couldn't wear them anymore.

Well done. When my HD 580 headband pad died, I had to cut the bumps off and stick a strip on it as it was the old flocked type foam and not the fabric covered stuff.

My HD 580s earpads are long past their best, so I think I'll be giving your DIY a go at some point as I have access to loads of different grades of foam.

Thanks very much for the write up, it has made my 580's feel young and alive again.

I took the liberty of making a Youtube video of the process, with credit to you for the original write up. I also substituted memory foam (visco elastic) for the open cell foam you used.

I've been extremely pleased with the results. I've found the memory foam took a bit of getting used to since it's so firm and was quite stinky for a couple weeks, but now that it's 'broken in' I don't know how I listened without it.

The video is here, btw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1G5quKPE9U&feature=youtu.be (removed- see new link below)

Thank you so much. I just re-stuffed the flattened the headband cushions with fill I had around the house.  30 minutes good as new.  Now onto find suitable sponge for the ea rpads.

Craig,
Thanks for your video.  I just did the headband fix (using fiber pillow type stuffing) following Bob's instructions. As soon as i get suitable fill for the ear pads, I'll do that project (though I'm not very confident of my thread/needle skills).

My question: Can you explain how you washed the ear pads after you removed the foam. What did you use? How did you dry? etc.

Mike
Had to remove my 'how to' video because of a copyright claim on the music I used, here's the re-uploaded vid:

Thanks for bumping this thread!!  I'm going to re-stuff my headband today.  I have dozens of unused little watch pillows (from my other hobby), that I can put to good use.

Just finished the repair and on one hand it definitely restores the headband padding back to its OEM comfort.  I was able to stuff more padding into the smaller side pillows to better distribute the weight on my head so, in that regard I think its a step up over the OEM padding.

Unfortunately you lose some degree of size adjustability.  The little trap doors that you cut out of the plastic partially obstruct the metal slide pieces, so the sliding adjustability is hindered.  Fortunately my head is not going to bloat or shrink appreciably in this lifetime, and I was able to find a sweet spot.  So I'm good to go, although I'll probably pick up an OEM replacement some time down the road, I wouldn't consider this as a permanent fix.

I came across this the other day and have just carried out the mod to the very tired pads on my HD580s. The difference is incredible! They seem to sound better too, which may be something to do with the positioning of the drive units being back to where it should be. I sealed the headband trapdoors with a strip of duct tape which I trimmed to fit the width of the band so I've had no problems with headband adjustment.

Thanks for sharing!
