SE846 Filter mod

Ok, put the greens in.  Wrapped Around Your Finger has lost some of the high end boost, bass is stronger (subwoofer action is clear), but treble reduction is mild.  Copeland's drums are right on, IMHO.  Will give it a listen the rest of the day, but this may be the best of the bunch.

Well, so I made the mistake of comparing the 535's (with grey dampers) with the 846's (w/green dampers) and it's no comparison.  The grey dampers give the 535's the signature sound of the 535 LTD's which are great, but the 846's sound like a veil has been lifted as compared to the blue filters that used to be in them.  I honestly don't think I can go back to the 535's.  What a stark difference, now.

Y'all are warned!

Navigating mouser.com can take a bit of work, and you need to be careful, because these dampers come in different diameters. These are the ones you want:

hi
Shall i order all these for my SE846 ?
and i dont know how to proceed when i receive them.

I would at least get the brown green red ones but they are cheap enough to just get them all. Remember to get at least a pair. And if you look at the top of the thread it shows how I did it.

Without video it is not complete!
You should add a video to show practically how to proceed :)
thanks

I'll see if I can do that. My method is to cut a section of the cotton swab. Ream it slightly with a toothpick or similar to open it ever so slightly but too hard and the plastic splits. Set the damper side down on flat surface and gently place and rock slightly until the damper gets started. Once in, you can push in rest of the way. Trim it to maybe 1/8" past the damper at most and use a slight amount of silicone grease or whatever to seal the slight leakage. If you can find the insulation csglinux mentioned it's better and easier to work with. He really helped perfect it with his method and testing.

Thanks to @Jamnperry for creating this thread, and @csglinux for introducing me into the Knowles dampers!  My impressions of the Knowles dampers is here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/675219/shure-se846-impressions-thread/15675#post_12733921.

would like to thanks @csglinux for the Tubing he sent me! Got it. I have ordered all the dampers listed.
I have started testing the dampers, and for me the green damper is the best !
great soundstage and better bass, high improvement of the SQ; even though that it was my previous HD800.  i'm using linum balanced cable / or Ted cable / with the SE846 and AK120 II.
will continue the test and come back for update.
Thanks,
sam

Definitively, the brown dampers are the best in my ear.

Here what the filters do to FR, hope this helps.

That's only part of the story and the curves are only valid for that particular BA in the Etymotic.

The general trend is correct though, higher resistance will damp the inherent HF resonances of the BA more. The location of the damper in the tube changes the effect though. The close the damper is too the BA, the more it only dampen the resonances and leave the rest of the response, including HF extension intact. The more the damper is placed at the end of the acoustic tube, the more it will effect a larger portion of the frequency response, including the resonances. I assume this is why Shure has combined both a closely spaced damper plus the additional porous foam towards the end of the tube to achieve their preferred target.

Once I'm able to do measurements again at work, I'll post a whole series of measurements in the industry standard 711 and .4 cc couper with the different dampers and mods.

So we need to experiment with both the different colors, and the location in the tube?

If you want to try all options, yes, but don't drive yourself crazy :D

I should point something else out: if people say for certain damper choices the "bass is much better" this is a placebo side-effect of the mids/highs being damper more/less. Those dampers don't effect the low frequencies.

EDIT: Currently digging the white filters with one foam piece from the blues the most. The balance is more neutral than the blue filters that way I feel.

EDIT 2: Yup, this is the one. Blue without foam is actually more harsh than white without foam. My favorite so far is white filter with 1 foam piece push close to the knowles damper. Least harshness with good extension. Dying to see what the differences actually look like on an FR curve.

I have bought

Ohm    Color    Knowles Code
680     White    1859
1000   Brown    1860
1500   Green    1861
2200   Red       1921
3300   Orange   1922

I am using heatshrink tube that will shrink to 2mm when heated with hair dryer.
Then insert the dampers and cut it to exact size of the damper.

So far, liking the green or red dampers.

Cheers.
