Schiit Yggdrasil Impressions thread
Aug 10, 2016 at 12:24 AM Post #3,001 of 12,206
I find my Yggy to be a bit glitchy at times. Just this evening I fired up my amp for some head time, and the balance was skewed to the right.
After trying a couple of things, I turned the Yggy off, waited about ten seconds, then powered it up again. Back to normal. I'm using the AES
input btw.

Other times, I've had it stop putting out an analog signal, even though it shows that it's getting a signal. It has also stopped accepting input
out of the blue. In all cases, rebooting it cured the problem. I guess Yggy can be high strung at times.

On another note, I recently signed up for Tidal Hi Fi, and must say that the quality is excellent. Definitely CD quality, especially thru Yggy.

Yggy's bad trip:

off topic:

This post is a total vent.  If you find that irritating,
welcome to my world.

Myself, Mrs gad1, and our faithfull gold lab who
freaks out whenever someone comes to the front
door, stayed home inside all day anticipating the
FedEx Yggy delivery from Schiit warranty.
At around 3PM I check the FedEx website and
see "Delivery Exception", customer not available,
2PM delivery attempt.  I check outside.  No door
tag.  Hard to imagine a delivery attempt was made
to my address.  I call FedEx with my sad story and
am told they will attempt to contact the driver for
a same day re-delivery if possible and will call me
back.  After an hour I call them.  They are unaware
of the previous conversation, put me on extended
hold, finally tell me the driver is out of area but will
deliver tomorow when of course I will not be home.
So now I have a case number and FedEx's
worthless assertion that they will deliver Thurs.
before 11 AM.  I trashed some plans to be here
again.

As many blues tunes have said; you don't know
what you got till it's gone, but the pain is more
bearable when it's insured.

If this is a re-occurring situation I'd look into how 'healthy' the ground is at your domicile.

Of course it may also be power spikes or other power transients that can cause computer based electronics to go sideways.

One way to test for this is (assuming you know what you are doing, and if not to find someone who is) measure the voltage between neutral and ground at where your gear is plugged in.
It should be a steady 0.0 volts ac and dc.

If not, a qualified electrician can check your breaker panel etc. for anomalies.

I unplugged Yggy for an evening to protect against
storm related power outages.  Next day my usb
enabled streamer no longer recognized the dac.
I hooked up another computer via usb. Still no
dac recognition.  Coax  connection worked fine.
Schiit happens.  Dealing with Schiit warranty
department was EZ.  They were/are attentive
and professional.  Now FedEx, that's another
story.

I had a similar thing happen to me as well. USB completely died without any apparent reason. It just got back from repair and I'm still a little nervous that it could happen again as shipping from Europe costs a lot...

Curious if other people had the same problem. There might be a bug with their USB :frowning2:

You, me and Gad1 make three, that I'm aware of.

My USB was also working fine until I powered it off to switch racks.  I haven't sent mine in or contacted schiit yet.

I've had delivery issues as well. I get 1-3 packages from Amazon per week with no issues, often getting them a day before scheduled.  Stuff that requires a signature seems to always have issues. Whenever I order higher dollar merch that requires signature I now have it routed to my local Fedex/Kinkos outlet for pickup. I know this isn't convenient for everyone, but it's a system that works and prevents having to wait an extra day or two to get your eagerly anticipated new toys.

A question for any Ragnarok owners (I searched for but did not find a Raggy dedicated thread to post in).

How easy, or hard, is it to find repeat volume settings with the volume knob detents.

Thanks.

I look for where the set screw is. for me it's usually at 12:00.

I love happy endings :)

Once again FedEx exceeded my expectations by
delivering only 2 hours past the expected delivery
window.  The usb board was replaced.  My usb
enabled squeezebox touch streamer displayed
"USB audio, Schiit Gen 3" and all is good again.
There will be months when Yggy will be turned
off for days multiple times.  I'm optimistic.

Thanks for the advice and  consolation,

Finally got my Yggy.  I know it has to be powered on for a while (weeks and more) prior to optimal performance.  I'll use my current Woo Audio DAC until then but do I have to have music/data signal actively input into the Yggy in addition to having it just powered on for it to "burn" in?

If so, since my source is a Mac Mini, my plan is to have the USB out from the Mini to the Woo DAC and the optical out to the Yggy.  I guess you can't have both output selections at the same time so will have to choose and switch accordingly.

It's less about "burn in" with Yggdrasil and more just about having it fully warmed up to it's operating temperature - or that's what I found at least, so you shouldn't need music playing through it (though that might improve other areas).

It sounded fabulous right out of the box and just got better over the next 4-7 days.

When I finally get mine, I'm going to plug it right in and start using it immediately if not sooner.

^^ +1. Mine was fabulous straight out of the box. Was there a breakthrough moment? Not really. Could be because my listening was sparodic and I didn't choose and systematically repeat a 'test track list' from which to notice any differences.

Nevertheless, it continues to amaze.
