Schiit Mjolnir 3 - Impressions Thread

While I can’t speak to the Jot2, in my limited headphone amp as a preamp experience (A3 and Piety) the MJ3 is the first one that doesn’t completely crumble the sound stage and separation when used as a preamp driving the amp section if my 2270 as an experiment. It sounds really great. Not replacing the preamp section of the 2270 because it is impractical but if I didn’t have an integrated already and the MJ3 made the sound it does come out of an amp I’d be very.
If you’re OK with a potential return if you don’t like it might be worth a try if you’d use it for headphone also. Would be a pretty expensive and limited preamp if you bought it just for that.
Thanks for this. I have a preamp/integrated (Parasound Halo), so the head amp wouldn’t replace it, but the Jot2resides just upstream from the preamp and allows me to attenuate the signal from the DAC and CD player… so all signal runs through the Jot2 before the preamp. Therefore, the head amp is involved in every listening session—regardless of whether headphones are involved, which they usually are not. I fear this would be a high cost for a product that wouldn’t provide a sonic benefit while listening via speakers since $1.2k is a higher than normal cost for me.

Do you think the sonic benefit is noticeable in this situation?

I misunderstood the way you’d be using the MJ3. Unfortunately I haven’t used any headphone amp this way, only as a preamp by removing the RCA jumpers between the preamp and amp sections of the otherwise integrated Marantz. I‘m not sure to want degree or positively/negatively the result would be and I’d hate to guess because the MJ cost was higher than normal for me too. Even used as a preamp, the time required to swap wires makes it difficult to A/B for for a detailed analysis in a meaningful way. I’m very familiar with the way the 2270 sounds with my specific setup and room; subjectively I felt like the MJ sounded great while the A3 was immediately noticeable a downgrade compared to the integrated preamp with my specific setup. The A3 functioned perfectly well but was perhaps too smooth with the old receiver and the result was unappealing for me. Not knocking the A3, it was a really enjoyable headphone amp that was my daily driver until I got the MJ3.

Attended the SOCAL Can Jam today and listended to the MJ3 connected to a Yiggy+ OG. I used my headphones (Denon AH-D9200) and I really enjoyed the sound the combination produced. It was not dull sounding, not overly bright, and great bass. While it is in the upper price range for Schitt, I prefered the sound over others at the show that cost twice to three times as much. I went back several times and even had my wife listen to the setup and she agreed. On a plus side I met and spoke with Jason. Great time at the Can Jam.

I concur. This is a great combo! I’m listening to it right now.

So far I only see ppl (including Schiit and myself) pair MJ3 with Yggy OG, but not LIM. I had very positive impression with LIM long time ago when I had it with other headphones amp. I recently had my og sold too. I will consider grabbing another Yggy in future but have to decide between og and LIM. Anyone tried MJ3 with LIM?

I have BF 2/64 + BURSON Soloist 3XP, it sounds good to my ears.
I became interested in MJ3.
Should I change my BURSON Soloist 3XP to MJ3?
Has anyone compared BURSON Soloist 3XP and MJ3?

In my memory, they are different animals. If you like transparency, details and layers, MJ3 could be a good choice over soloist.

One thing I don't like soloist is the loud pop noise when turning on/off the unit.

I used to have the Soloist 3XP as my daily driver, with my BF2 as the anchor. I also had an MJ2 as my tube amp in my chain. I ended up selling the Soloist, even after getting the Supercharger because I thought the overall sound was too thin. It was incredible at detail retrieval, imaging, instrument separation, and overall clarity. However, I always gravitated back to the MJ2 because of the fullness and richness of sound, despite it not being as refined, overall, as the Soloist.

Having now sold the Soloist, and having recently acquired the MJ3, I can confidently say that the MJ3 is what I had hoped the Soloist would have offered me when I had it. The MJ3 manages to do everything the Soloist does, while being more rich and adding a tad of warmth without losing any of the detail that is present in the music.

Ultimately, I think it will depend on what your headphones are. I have the HE1000SE as my primary, and this BF2+MJ3 combo is exactly what I want for these headphones. The chain is able to ensure that the HEKSE are being fed a well detailed, dynamic, and smooth experience without any of the downsides this headphone can have, such as sibilance/sharpness in the treble.
