Schiit 'Magnius' - new $199 fully balanced headphone amp

I also already own hip-dac and find it pleasant to listen to, the only thing I dislike about it is low volume imbalance that starts below 10o clock for my Sundara.

I dont have really experience with “neutral” amps unless Apple lightening to 3.5 dac adapter paired with fairly little bright IEMs (Fiio FH5) counts. When comparing fh5 between two (on hipdac with volume normalization, very sensitive), on hipdac I pereiced it warm but slightly lacking in treble detail like sparkling accoustics. On both the bass seemed little anemic, maybe little better on hip-dac but definietly notably improved with xbass boost. But I wouldnt day FH5 lacked bass, even when paired using Apple dongle.

i also have a pair of OG airpods in stereo mode, impressive bass and mids, decent highs, but at times bass too muddy and uncontrolled for my taste.

I think for me warm vs neutral is not thay important for me, but I lean on neutral slightly warm side. Whats more important is that amp does not inhibit dynamic (instead of leveling up all sounds in mix, rather preserve level of volume of each sound as it was recorded, but maybe slightly bring forward some very far recessed soft tones to bring more details). What I dont like when everything sounds very congested. I like some instrument separation with soundstage opened up decently.
Modi 3 is okay. But i will not listen to this dac when being tired (eg. after a whole day working or being sleepy). Because it has some shouty/distorted sound in the mids and treble. It makes me iritated and anxious. That is something I cannot point out but I can feel it. When I feel relaxed and good this dac is listenable

That's the "Velvet Sound" you're hearing in the AKM chips. Your opinion matches mine, and it's similar to what I hear in the Modius.

I'd say the point of an amp is to produce a sound pleasing to the user. This is why tube amps are so popular because you can roll tubes to achieve the desired sound. Some people prefer clinical sound, especially professional mixers. I'd say a large proportion of hobbyists prefer warmer sounds because they are usually less fatiguing.

It sounds like you have your mind made up on the Heresy, so go for it. If you like black more than silver, that will always be in the back of your mind and can affect your listening enjoyment. Heck, I spend hours comparing pictures of tubes on eBay looking for ones that pass the aesthetic test. Even if a tube sounds great, if it doesn't look right or as pristine to me as my vision of it should be, I'll roll in a different tube even if the sound isn't exactly as good. Trust me, I get the visual aspect of this hobby as well.
Looks like Schiit cancelled my order because of suspicious fraud due to using different billing address than delivery (wanted it to deliver to my workplace and most vendors do not not have issues with using alternative address for delivery).

So this gives me chance to rethink And whether to still go for Schiit (Magni3+ or Asgard 3) or go for Zen Can + other DAC.

+ Zen Can for having pentacon 4.4mm and using fully balanced amp, so regardless if using SE or bal input and SE or balanced headphone output they should almost sound the same.

On hip-dac, compared to SE, on balanced the soundstage opens up more and sounds bit warmer.

On schiit, if Asgard3 does not provide extra benefit over Magni3+ for Sundara then I would go for Magni3+ and backorder maybe Modi Multibit or just go regular modi3+ that is available.

Im bit worried that multibit would make sound modern well recorded music in studio produced in last 2 decades like EDM, overprocessed.

If Asgard3 better, maybe pair it with Modius (AK4493) to match stack size and heard its some improvement over AK4490 but if there is barely imprvement then would save money with Modi3+

anyway here is what I am leaning toward;

1) Modi3+ + Zen Can
2. Modi3+ + Magni3+
3. Modi3/Modius + Asgard3

anyway its possible I will be moving in a few months so maybe I should hold on and just enjoy my sundarad with hip/dac and just get myself second pair of headphones that I can easily take with me such ad DT770 80/250 ohms

IMHO: Zen dac sig + Magni 3+

I think Magnius has always been in black color only. Only its balanced DAC companion Modius, comes with the choice between silver and black.
This was a sore spot for me. I was one of the first early adopters of Modius, which I purchased on the rumored assumption there was a matching balanced amp. I went silver. Then, when Magnius was announced in only black, I asked Jason about silver and what about us early silver Modius adopters? His answer was basically, “Too bad,” and his typical other line about other fine products being out there. As it turned out, it may have been a blessing in disguise because reviews of Magnius suggested it wasn’t a sound I’d like. But, I’m still a bit sore about the whole thing.
