Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

How about a much less controversial topic, Bourbon!

Two other friends of mine and I are sampling Bourbon. My buddy realized that he had over 60+ after visiting Kentucky for a road trip with his wife. He decided to do a NCAA style bracket after he realized he had enough for the first round.

The initial pairings were all randomized.
  • Are we taking it seriously? Kind of at least to the point of trying them all neat and progressively adding drops of water
  • Do any of us care which ends up the final winner. Not really as we’re having to much fun sampling them
  • Do we discuss what we were all tasting and why we picked the winner of the pairing? Yes but with laughter and ribbing each other
  • We do a lot of solve of the worlds problems and promptly forget the solution by the next morning
What does this have to do with audio?
  • We are listening to vinyl during the sessions from all of our collections
  • Does my buddies system sound good? Yes, compared to most systems
  • Would I eq it like he does? No
  • Is there too much bass? Yes
  • Does he like the smiley face eq setting? Yes
Do any of our preferences for Bourbon or how his system sound matter? Not in the least bit as he likes it and it’s better than what most people listen to.

It all comes down to personal preferences and there is no right or wrong.

Here is the bracket so far. On any day some of the winners could flip.

Enjoy!
Rowan's Creek is one of my go-to's. :)

It’s a superb device, but maybe through sheer luck, the synergy between Folkvangr and HD800S is so good, that I don’t need it.
Speaking of Folkvangr (contemplating pulling the trigger on a classified), how in the world does one know when a power tube is going bad, and which one is the culprit?

Random, musically related question and downsizing and stuff:

I'm planning on selling off my LPs, turntable and Mani2 (downsizing, going all in on roon, long term preparation for my sleep research project).
I have entered all my LPs on discogs.
I'd like to make sure I have digital copies of the things I care about (btw, The Police Every Breath You Take: The Classics CD is a ripoff).

Anyone know of an app to correlate the songs in roon, MusicBrainz and discogs?
  • roon knows what I own
  • discogs knows what LPs I have. It's not friendly at track-listing
  • MusicBrainz has track info
P.S. my avatar when it comes to coding something like this is

This just came up for sale in my area. Seller says it was likely never used. Tempting, hut hard to justify to my wife. Would be cool if I had a lot more tubes. It was for TV repairmen who did house calls.

Channel imbalance, scratchy sound. You have to tap the tubes for the ones with a lot of microphonics and replace the worst microphonic ones

That's easy enough to fix. Buy more tubes. 🤣

Seriously, that's a good price for a caddy that looks to be in pristine condition. I picked up a mint RCA branded one quite a number of years ago, and if adjusted for inflation probably paid an equivalent amount. Very hard to find these today in great condition....most are beat up pretty badly, have rusted hardware, etc.

Well, I love my Folkvangr, @michael2v

I couldn't possibly recommend such a 'bonkers' amp though....

I have absolutely no idea how I'll know when a tube is failing, but I do have a box of spares

I thought GE was an object of scorn, tube-wise?
Not all GE tubes are bad. They had manufacturing problems from time to time that resulted in some decent tubes. 🤣
