What a fun chapter. What a fun company. Hope everyone had a great turkey day!

Giving the JDS Labs Atom amp a run for its money.

Discrete til I die! Sorry Jason, dogmas die hard!

Seriously Magni 3+ like a mini-Vidar? I need to get my ears on this thing!

As a card carrying member of the Discrete 4 Lyfe Brigade, I object to being called "old" and I demand equal representation for high-negative-feedback high-bandwidth output stages because disturbing my dog's sleep is important to me. And why Darlington? Moah Current, son.

Further thoughts on heresy: or, Preconceptions vs. Performance.

It's sometimes difficult to remember that we all live in separate universes, each of which we construct in our individual cranium (crania?) and which may or may not have anything to do with reality. And how can we know reality, anyway?

Point being that many of us, especially the types who become audiophiles, tend to commit to our ideals and preconceptions more powerfully and faithfully than we commit to even our spouses. Which leads us to avoid and even condemn that which we think we should not approve/support/enjoy. And so we miss out, if we don't occasionally step off our well-trodden path.

Because things do change, even when we might prefer they didn't.

This of course applies to all areas of life, not just op-amps. The question becomes, what's more important - being willing to experiment, or being right, being firm in your convictions?

The older I get, the more flexible I try to be. (Mentally and physically.) Because there are good new things out there to be enjoyed. I applaud Jason for his approach to audio, engineering and business. Even if he has rendered all my old Schiit obsolete. Guess I need to put some new Schiit in the cart, and find some new music to enjoy.

    Merry Christmas!

Hmmm...starting to sound like the Philosophy course I took as an elective when I was in Engineering School!

I distinctly remember all sorts of these rabbit holes including the Brain-in-a-vat (BIV) discussion - mind opening to some, mind numbing to others.

Clearly, we as a species have progressed beyond this nonsense

@Jason Stoddard You missed the most (probably) important reason to go with Magni Heresy - it comes in the sweet red and black colour scheme with a red LED!

Well, I'm going to wait for the Vali Heresy edition :)

I have a Hel and it does sound great. But not as nice as the Vali 2.

    @Jason Stoddard --

Thanks for the excellent post. I love the fact that Schiit is open to new ideas and not necessarily stuck in one mindset/path to make their excellent products. After going to the site and looking at Magni 3+ and Heresy I did notice one small detail that I hope is not a new trend with the SFF products. The back of the Magnis no longer have the VOLTAGE designated by the AC in port. This has proven extremely helpful when I'm re-arranging my gear and unplugging/re-plugging as it allows me to know which wall wart or floor wart connector is the appropriate for that device. Is this 16V, 6V, 14V, etc? Not a big deal, but it was sure convenient.

Thanks again for all you, Mike and the team do for us gear-heads and music lovers!!

New Magnis actually ship with a 15VAC wall-wart. Bottom line, 14/15/16VAC all work with our small products, though the 14/15V are higher current and needed for Magni to produce its rated power. 6VAC is pretty much dead, so that's a non-issue.

To summarize, we have three current wall-warts:

    1. 14VAC/15VAC at 1500mA--used for Magni. These are fundamentally the same, we just raised the rating a bit in the newer ones.
    2. 16VAC at 500mA--used for Modi Multibit, Loki Mini, etc. This will run a Magni, but you won't get full power from it.
    3. 24/6VAC, used for Vali 2. This one doesn't plug into anything else, so you don't need to worry about it. It's a large DIN plug, so no mistakes.

There's also a 6VAC at 1500mA, used for defunct products like Eitr and Wyrd. Soon dead. Also you can't plug in 16VAC/14VAC/15VAC stuff into this one, the center pin is larger.

There's also the floor wart, which has 14VAC, 16VAC, and 6VAC plugs, for systems with multiple products.

Great post sir! Cool new products!

Question, can Magni 3+ actually be used as a flea watt speaker amp, for my desktop?
What is the output impedance on the preamp outs?

I'm too old to start a war (flame or otherwise) so I'll just pretend the "gasp" was a typo that missed the final edit. :stuck_out_tongue:

    j/k -- great chapter!!
  12. Jason Stoddard
Nope, neither is a speaker amp, sorry. Magni 3+ is topologically the same as Vidar now, though.

Output impedance of the preamp outs is 75 ohms, as is typical for our products.

I suppose that with "flea watt speaker amps" @Rensek means something like the Omega's, like these: https://omegaloudspeakers.com/products/compact-alnico-monitor?variant=32172350732?

They are Okay with just 2 watts of power output.

In that case, would a Magni 3+ be OK for them?

Obviously some custom cabling would be required, to use speakers.

How about a third Magni, a Magni SP,

Change the preamp outputs to speaker jacks that accept banana only......
