All of this A1 vs A2 conversations have me questioning what’s in my 2-channel system. I picked up a Gungnir MB for a crazy low price locally because the usb (gen 5) only intermittently works. I just assumed it was an A2, but maybe some B serial numbers are A1?

The other sticker say Gungnir Multibit MB01867 if that matters? Regardless I love my Gumby and eventually need to send it back to the mothership for the Unison upgrade.

I don't think I've heard of a B s/n that wasn't an A2. But that doesn't mean there are none ofc.

The most unexpected part of the upgrade process for me was when I sent my A1 in to get Unison, it came back with a matte button rather than the shiny one it left with.

That would kind of piss me off. I love the older style shiny buttons and knobs.

The OG Gungnir is challenging to open. The top, front, and bottom are all one piece making a u shape. Lots of screws involved, and I found it difficult to line up the leds with the holes in the case upon reassembly.
There was a guide on-line - not from Schiit that really worked well when I did the Gen5 upgrade. Keeping the LED's lined up to the holes is the critical issue.

I’m describing my experience installing Gen2, I started out with Gen1. I went straight from Gen2 to Unison, so that was the one and only time I opened it up.

Unison is factory only I thought.

There's also a final run of Gungnir that would be an A2 board but had one of the clocks removed due to parts availability. I forget what serial name those have but in either case they too would be an A2 board. Hope this helps a little.

Pretty sure the 1st Gumby I owned fell into that camp. It was part of the final run of A2 Gungnir’s. I sold it after finding the above Gumby for sale locally.

I am a new Gungnir MB A2 w/ unison owner. I have a question. The gungnir is going to feed my HP8 which only has RCA inputs. I have seen some reports of the Gungnir having a noisy RCA out so I was debating using the XLR out and a RCA adapter. Is this recommended?

Just use the rca outs! It’s totally fine!

Edit: don’t want to be bossy. Apologies.

I have been using rca outs from 2 different Gungnirs (A2 for a few years then A1 recently) to various amps for years. BH Crackatwoa and a Woo WA2 most recently. Love how they sound with RCA. Also Have used Valhalla 2 and NITSCH Piety this way.

Don’t get sucked into interconnect nervosa man!

I have HF hearing loss so take all that with a grain of salt.

Lots of people like the G1 and G2 with XLR rather than SE, and there is a good technical reason. SE 2 volts out max, XLR 4 volts. I have never heard my G2 w/ SE, but with my Gungnir MB A! I had for 9 years w/ 3 diff USB's? The XLR was audibly better than SE.

Not sure what will happen with an adapter, I'd do a search AND ask Schiit as well.

I remember someone recommending a device like this: the Radial Pro-Iso Stereo XLR Isolator and Converter. If you try it, let us know!

IIRC, it's not so much that the RCA is noisy, just that's it's not as good as the XLR. For kind of obvious reasons as the XLR is a superior connector and a superior cable.

I would use something like a Jensen Transformers Iso-Max PI-2XR to preserve the quality of the XLR when converting to RCA. Those adapters are kind of like the ground lift plugs one can get - fine in a pinch, not ideal.
