the scores came out 16 minutes ago (3am) and i got pretty raped:
math: 640
verbal: 630
writing: 510

the math score always seems confuse the hell out of me. why is it that i can get perfect on the practice garbage, but never do well on the real thing. same thing happened on the PSAT and SSAT.

anyways, yeah, how'd you folks do?

When I took them there was only two graded portions and a perfect was a 1600. I got a 1260 when I first took mine.

What is the new SAT out of?

New SAT is from 0-2400, each section has a maximum value of 800.

Anyway, know what you mean, cire. I've not taken the SAT, but had the ACT a few times. Best composite was 29 (0-36), which is roughly a 1300 on the old SAT, 1900 on the new one. Don't remember my exact math score, but it was much lower than I would have liked. Ah well. Was good enough to get me where I wanted.

Last time I took the SAT was something like 5-6 years ago. Got a 800 verbal, 690 Math.

Look at it this way, cire: if I understand correctly, the average graduating senior should be getting about a 500 in each of the sections. So you're still above average. You've still got time, probably - there will be opportunities to test again. What's your preparation strategy been like?

I took the old one, max 1600. I got a 1460.

I got a 33 on the ACT, and that's with bombing the Math section. I got a perfect score in the science section, but only a 24 in math because I had never taken trig or algebra.

Don't sweat low scores. You're a junior in HS, right? You have potentially SEVERAL more opportunities to take the test. The best thing to do is get a great book on test strategies and preparation. Read the book, do the exercises and then start taking practice tests. But when you take the practice tests, take them under actual exam conditions. Sit down in a quiet place with an alarm clock and do the entire test the way you'll do it on test day. I believe a lot of people who have trouble with standardized tests really just have problems with time management. So that's what you have to practice.

since you're a junior now, a 2300 is like the new 1600

I wouldn't sweat them too much either. They really mean nothing. A college friend of mine scored a 1560 on the old one, yet he flunked his first year and was kicked out and this is only one of a dozen or so stories I know like that. The smartest guy I know, now studying to be a doctor, scored a 1240 on the SAT. I could never explain how he did so poorly given his great intelligence. Maybe he was just a bad test taker or maybe he was being modest.

I hate how there are two english sections now. I'm so much better at math and my vocabulary sucks...
