The isolation isn't bad, per se. It's average at best. And no, if coupled with larger tips, that insert deeper (similar to the Monster tri-flanges, or HiFiMan bi-flanges), I experience no leakage whatsoever my friend.
Ditto. The same tips that provide me with a deep seal and better isolation worked equally well with both the FX700 and EX1000; hence I too would say they're closer than not in that regard.
Please allow me to ask a Rookie question. Unfortunately I'm not overly familiar with high end gear in general, and with the appropriate special terminology.
After previously having used Shure SE 535 from time to time, I recently bought the Sony MDR-EX1000. And using them with an iPhone 4S, I like their sound signature very much. Due to my lack of analytical high end experience, I can't describe, which aspects of the sound reproduction are so much pleasing me, but I can only say that it is just their overall sound, and my subjective feeling of "presence" with vocalists.
Now I am in search of a headphone, OnEar or AroundEar, with a sound as similar to the EX1000 as conceptually possible. The aspect which interests me most is the mentioned enormous feeling of presence with a well recorded vocalist, which I subjectively sense with the EX1000. I've got records, where the vocalist sounds like just standing one meter from me, and the clarity (it does indeed remember me to my electrostatic speakers) sometimes makes my flesh creep...
My Sennheiser HD-25-1 II and PXC 250 do not come even to any remote similarity with this characteristic of the EX1000, unfortunately.
If there should be several alternatives, then I would want an earphone which can be driven to adequate volume by the iPhone (which e.g. is the case with my Sennheiser HD25-1 II, but is not the case with my Sennheiser PXC 250). I guess asking within the hoped-for alternatives for a noise-cancelling headphone would immediately slash the list of possibilities to Zero, isn't its?
I don't know of anything but I know what you mean. Their midrange is really something else. I lack for words to describe it. I guess it's just a combination of their timbre and clarity, but vocals sound SO lifelike. It's uncanny.
You might want to look at the Sony MDR-Z1000, from other peoples impressions it sound like it has a similar sound signature. I also might be getting a pair soon
after bought the mdr-ex800st in tokyo last month, i found it sounds so good yet priced so reasonably (and yet still made in japan!), I kept looking for the bigger brother ex1000 in good condition hoping to get even more amazing sound.
eventually got a pair of pristine condition 2nd hand but found the tuning is entirely different from ex800st! much more details and relatively less mid-bass. i need to dial the vol up (vs ex800st) by a few notch to get the desire listening level. ergonomic, sound isolation, etc. showed their age and are really great by today's standard. but over 10yrs passed, these are still a pair of very respectable sounding iems.
