I did not put this in the review, but the Valhalla did quite nicely with the K340.  This is a pairing I can definitely recommend, as long as you don't insist on ear-bleeding levels.

Thank you for your response. No ear-bleeding levels for me. My normal listening levels are generally 75 to 80 dBc peak, checked with a sound level meter.

Good job Rob. Did you ever listen to the Little Dot MKIII? It would be an interesting comparison. The one I had used Russian and Mullard tubes. It was a nice little amp for the money.

Thanks guys. Ross, no, I've never heard the Little Dot, unfortunately, as that would make a good comparison.

Considered it but it is a pass for me to look for another tube amp that will work well with both the K340 and LCD-2.

It's only marginally less efficient than the K701, and the Valhalla will drive the 62-ohm K701 to pretty scary levels.

When you're talking something like 32 ohms and 89dB, then I start getting scared.

I hope this helps!

I can attest to this.  I can't turn the Valhalla up much further past 12:00 before my ears ask for forgiveness with the 701s.

Nice review as well Skylab.  The Valhalla was my first experience with tubes and I admit I was a little nervous about how "tubey" it would paint all of my music.  I was relieved when it didn't change the sound much compared to what I'm used to and that where it did, it did so tastefully.

I'm also in the tube-newb camp and was glad that the provided tubes were felt to be the best match.  I get the "tinker" factor of tube rolling but it seems far too daunting for a newb.

I don't know how you guys can bear to listen at anything past 12:00. My limit is around 9:00 using my HD650. At 9:30, my ears start to hurt.

9:00? Wow. That's like not even audible on my 600s... mouse fart territory. I like to hover between 11 and 1 so that I can eek out all the detail.

And great review btw. I agree that the Valhalla is a nice little compromise between "tubey or not tubey", and find that it usually suits the music I listen to very well.

Sorry to dig this thread out of the grave, but I'd like to know more about the K702 pairing. I've been told countless times that OTL tubes are not good for K70X series. Can anyone attest?

is this good with HD650 or the DT990 600 Ohm version??im planning to buy one..hehehe

It should be a good match with both.  It was really very impressive with the Beyer T1.
