Mrarroyo, YOU WIN THE JACKPOT! Nice call. I tried this and it's definitely the sweet spot. Beyer pads AND Beyer foam make the RP21's more comfortable and better sounding.

But you're using the Beyer leather pads, no?

Okay, that's what I thought...I got the impression from your response to mrarroyo that you thought the Beyer velours + Beyer foam were the winning combination...and since not all pads are equal, I thought I'd check.

EDIT: Good lord, this thread is wide.

I wonder, is it possible to stuff the DT770 foam underneath the stock pads? I don't mind the stocks & foam is a heck of a lot cheaper than new Beyer earpads. Skylab, care to be the guinea pig?

BTW, the part # for the Beyer DT770 replacement foam is #333.395. Apparently it can be ordered at fullcompass.com & several European websites. Fullcompass.com doesn't list a price, but other sites quote the foam at 1.85 euros or 1.24 GBP. I think I can justify that expense in the name of frivolous modding!

@ mrarroyo: Save us from the huge pix! Have mercy!

Sweet mod!

+1 for mrarroyo to thumbnail his pics!

For those in North America who are interested in buying Beyerdynamic DT770 foam pads to mod their RP-21s, pricing information @ Fullcompass.com can be found here. Ordering information can be found here.

The part # is 014-333.395

For Europeans with similar ambitions, go here.

Just trying to consolidate information for the sake of those who don't monitor all of the Equation Audio threads!

Anyone have a set of the original RP-21 foam circles that they'd be willing to sell me? I just purchased a set of used Equation Audio RP-21s from which the original circles were removed, and I'd like to have a full array of choices when they arrive so I can decide which way I prefer them. PM me if you think we can work something out! Thanks!

Just got finished pulling off the foam, I'm impressed. I enjoy the more in-your-face presentation. Maybe I should pick up some Grado's next. This mod was very worth the 2 seconds it took to do it though, I'm happy.

Well, my pads went back in tonight. Perhaps my ears just stick out abnormally far, but I found them to be God-awfully uncomfortable without the pads in. Sound was nice, but I don't think it was worth the, eh, pain.

Ok I used to dislike rp21 compared to ms1, they sounded too dark, but the bass was pretty nice at they same time. Honestly, I didn't use them almost at all. Anyways, after headfi get up again (thank god!) I decided to just remove the pads, and yeah!, its a big difference, they sound a lot better now, more like ms-1 but closed and more bass. Now we just need a mod to make these headphones look good, they are so ugly that I can't use them at public.

(MS-1 are soo beautiful and the fit my style perfectly..:P)

Glad you like the mod. Funny that your sentiments (regarding MS-1s & RP-21s) are pretty close to what I was thinking at the time I first modded mine!
