Rega Saturn

wohoo..1st to post this:

Rega got into class A recommended on Stereophile (which really doesn't mean anything), but has "$$$" along with the recommendation which means that the CDP performs significantly above its price point. Nice..a 'bargain' player in their class A ...

Sweet! I'm still on the fence on the the Saturn and the Apollo for redbook. I'm leaning towards the Apollo at this point however.

I think I'm going to find a close Rega dealer with both of them and go in for an audition of them both.

Has anyone tried MP3 with Saturn?? WELL YOU NEED TO!

Oh..my..Saturn must be THE BEST mp3 player I have ever heard! I was really lazy last night and didn't feel like burning 8 CDs from ape file. So I thought hmm..Saturn plays mp3, I can fit 8 CD worth of mp3 on 2CD
biggrin.gif
The result was shocking! The bass, the high end extension, the sound stage, the organic sound...I didn't know mp3 can sound this good! crazy stuff. don't take my word for it...what I know
wink.gif
try it yourself. just make sure to do at least 256kbs

<warning, you should take my shocking impression with a grain of salt always. give me few days to iron my excitement out...

lol...$2500 mp3 player...great stuff isn't it? I really need to do a mp3 vs CD see if I can tell a difference ...lol....I have serious written mp3 off as a listenable format ...but I guess I need to reevaluate that.

I have made many CDRs with 256K MP3 format for playing in my car audio system and did briefly stick one in Saturn to verify it plays MP3 but didn't listen for very long...........I have too many CDs that need attention

Also I have played many CDRs in CD format burned at 12x speed and have had no problems with playback.

BTW my Saturn vs G08 comparo has been delayed and will take some time to complete, so don't hold your breath.......it will come eventually.

I also tried mp3s on my Saturn last week. It is definitely the best mp3 player I have heard, ever. But I am not going to invest more time in mp3 unless I can figure out what the Saturn actually supports. The documentation doesn't say much about max bitrate, cd layout, etc.. to get the functionality of album and song navigation.

I've been holding my breath.... I can't handle suspense.

At least give a mini-teaser review.

Can you move the comparo along? I think one of my CDPs is going to break down in early October

Hopefully you might include some metal comparisions in your thoughts. Most of the reviews here I read either have no metal at all, or at best have one hard rock CD included.

And the ones that do have metal often seem to think that metal is solely defined by the bass.

Sigh.

How about a mini first impressions?
Just in point form just so we get the idea, followed by a proper review later?

Throw us a bone

I have heard these words spoken many times before and it is time to say them again, "Damn you Head-Fi".

Just placed my order for a Rega Saturn.

I luv these 'premonitions'

More Mp3 function: Saturn plays all regular kbps and VBR up to 320kbps. I usually keep mine at 320kbps VBR. Oh the convenience of playing 5 CDs in one sitting (literally, so I don't need to get up..LMAO).

The logic of spending 2k on a CD player to play MP3's escapes me. Alas, different strokes for different folks.

if the pop is already compressed beyond recognition, 320kbp won't make any difference

Serious music are still in CD format.
