A Christmas Tale - 8.5/10

Excellent family drama by Arnaud Desplechin, set in Roubaix, France. Truly epic, a unique twist on the prodigal-son-returns concept. It's also worth noting that the music (the unobtrusive use of it) is genius: several Ellingtons (one by Joe Henderson), Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Nagat El Saghira, Mingus's "Reincarnation of a Lovebird", Cecil Taylor's "Bulbs" and "Air", Pandit Hariprasad Churasia, Otis Redding's "Merry Christmas, Baby", etc, etc.

"The Shawshank Redemption" (Blu-Ray) [10/10]: This movie is simply perfect. I never tire of seeing it again. I thoroughly enjoyed the bonus features on this blu-ray release as well. Seven Academy Awards and won none. Though it tanked at the box office, it has been a consistent leader in home video sales and rentals for over a decade. It is also rated as the best or near best movie ever made on numerous polls. Great movie!

Avatar - 8.5/10

I really enjoyed this movie, the story did follow the same lines as other "epic" films but with a scifi twist, but the 3d effects, cgi, and entertaining story kept it interesting for me. I look forward to it coming out on bluray, I'm sure it will look great on the lcd screen as well.

Law Abiding Citizen

4/10

It could be so much better, if they exploited the moral dilemma more for example.
The whole movie is too slick imho.

I thought Invictus was very well done. Eastwood kept at arm's length material that could very easily become maudlin. He let the movie breath. The man is a treasure with a resume full of coffee table movies. It's a shame the film hasn't fared better. 9/10
