Amelie: 10/10 (one of my all time favourite movies, in some ways its like bieng in a dream land, but there's always emotional connection with the characters).

thank you for not saying it´s the best... Nothing has ever come close to the Shawshank redemption. It´s just the perfect movie 11/10

.

A suggestion if you liked The Mist try the Descent. Seen it 4 times by now at least. Otherwise there is many superb movies. Not as good as the books of course that´s impossible.

Enjoyed "descent" ... great estrogen fueled romp.

And on another note ...

Saw Star Trek yesterday and even not being a Trek fan historically ...

KICK ASS MOVIE!

9/10 easy (audiogon scale) ...

They really nailed it. Superbly acted across the board.

The opening scene, juxtaposing child birth with the death of a captain that chooses to go down with his ship ... is just gorgeously played. Bravo.

Recommend it.

The Star Trek -- 11/10 -- well night perfect. One would have to be a pretty piss-poor mood for this not to be totally entertaining. Reference quality special effects. Just enough references to canon without being obtrusive, difference from canon well-explained without the explanation being obtrusive.

And most of all, a just plain fun story. And yes, the opening/prologue definitely pulled on my heart-strings. Completely manipulative, and I loved it.

Protector -- excellent martial arts film, with classic ultra-simplistic plot -- foreign men come to foreign land, do something bad to boy, he follows them to the big city, gets in trouble due to culture differences, figures it out, kicks ass.

Actually, that sounds like Crocodile Dundee. But still, anyway, superb movie, if you watch martial arts films, this one is one that should be on your Netflix queue.

Tripping the Rift, the Movie -- meh. Not particularly pornographic (not enough Seven), not particularly funny...so that leaves, what, the production values of a 486?

Do you mean the film with elephants? Because if that is the martial arts film that you are talking about I love that movie!

Dude, I should of known that show would air a noodling episode. My favorite so far has been the Croc farm, where our protagonist was assigned to sex a bin full of five footers. Television doesn't get much better, except of course for River Monsters. I'm sure you've already checked that out.

Thanks Hands on a Hard Body has been queued. I've always been a day late on good doc's save the Oscar hyped fare.

Yes, that was the elephant movie, and I loved it, too.

Intersting to note: Stephen King has actually stated that he preffered the movie ending to his end. Even going as far as saying I wish I thought of that.

Star Trek, 7/10.

First, it was well acted, well directed, good effects, and was a thoroughly entertaining two hours. No regrets for seeing it and I plan to see the sequel.

Thing is, it was missing that certain intellectual component Star Trek always had. Same with throwing some red meat to science geeks. It had neither.

I don't wear costumes, go to conventions or speak Klingon. I don't much care about the canon, either. But I saw plenty of reruns of TOS growing up, loved TNG, caught parts of the other franchises, and have seen most of the movies. There were always philosophical debates, allegories involving politics, geeky theoretical physics references, and so on. This didn't have any of that. It was more of a well done space opera. A space opera I enjoyed. But it wasn't quite the Star Trek I love.

Maybe this was just an establishing move, to put the characters in place and set everything up. If they put the intellectual/geek angle into the next one with the same production values, it'll be unbelieveable.

I haven´t read the book but yes liked the ending. Though it didn´t really make sense for him to do that which I guess why King didn´t thought of it. But well as for great movie endings I love the descents ending. I won´t spoil anything though just watch the entire movie

Saw Star Trek last night in an IMAX. I give it 8/10.

Firstly, I don't care for the IMAX experience for films like this. I need to be able to take the whole thing in. Having the screen take up the majority of my field of vision makes it hard to follow fast action sequences. I was middle theater but I think back row would still be too close for me.

About the movie: Very well done, but it was definitely geared toward the mainstream audiences more than the hard-core Sci-Fi crowd. The effects were top notch. I especially liked the scenes where the background was a planet surface from a low orbit.
And I'm of the opinion that the villain can make or break a film. In this case that's not true. The story of how Kirk and Spock met and how Kirk became captain of the Enterprise was done well enough that the villain was less important. But I will say that the Romulan captain was a good villain and added a real sense of menace.

I loved Dr. McCoy in this movie. Very well acted with good dialog for his character.

I haven't started collecting Blu-Ray discs because I've had other things going on (headphone audio) and I don't own a large HDTV (yet), but this may be my first Blu-Ray purchase.

"Red Dragon" - 9/10
I have a hard time rating this movie. I mean, is it better than Silence Of The Lambs? It's a little faster and more exciting in my opinion though Hopkins had more liberty in SOTL it feels. Because of that 'The Cannibal' gets a little more attention. Going to rate it slightly above SOTL but they're close.

^ Going to hit Hannibal next, then perhaps Hannibal Rising? I love SOL; perhaps my favorite movie of all time for many different reasons.

Concurrently, Powder Blue - 0/10 - may be the worst move I've ever seen. That's not hyperbole. I cannot remember one redeemable quality. Biel even looked a little too thin. However, it might be worth a viewing. Invite over your cheekiest movie snarky friends and down some brews. There's a good time d with the unintentional humor.
