RANT: I'm starting to hate Sony

So far, it's been an almost even split between the four choices in the poll - but the majority of them falls into either of two "extremes" ("It sucks!" and "Huh? I wouldn't buy a @#$%ing Sony consumer product!") C'mon! Get your &@^*ing @$$ back over here!!

I posted 'indifferent'. Let's see if 2 votes later it's 5 to every choice, making this the most inconclusive poll ever

LOL, you are right. I don't think I can change my vote now, tho.

I guess I must be in the minority, but I think Sony makes some ok products, and I've had good success with most of my Sony products.

I bought a 5-disc Sony changer six years ago, it was 2nd from the top of their US consumer line, optical out, disc naming, etc. Used it pretty heavily for four years, and sold it to my brother-in-law last year, and it is still working fine, no problems.

I bought a Sony VCR that was in the middle of their line-up 5 1/2 years ago. It has seen quite heavy use. I'm still using it daily today. It was in once for service about a year after I had it, cost me $75 for labor and the parts were still under warranty.

I bought a Sony "car discman" PCDP seven years ago. Not too bad sounding, 12mW headphone output. Never had any problems with it.

Got a Sony Dolby Digital receiver two years ago. It is in their "DB" series which is a step above their standard line and shares a lot of features with the ES line. It has performed flawlessly.

I currently also use Sony V6 and 888SP headphones, 915 PCDP, MZ-R90 MDP, as well as a boombox, and a car stereo which was in our old Volvo when we bought it. I usually buy Sony products for their quality and features, but seldom buy the very bottom of their consumer line, and seldom for when I am looking for the best sound quality. In my experience, Sony is one of the better low-fi brands and their ES and upper product lines are decent mid-fi products.

Speaking specifically about Sony headphones, they have proven time and again that they know how to make good sounding quality headphones (V6, 888, 3000, etc), yet for the most part choose not too, for whatever market-driven reason. Too bad they choose not to produce good sounding cheap cans like Koss does.

I have the Sony MD-R900 MD recorder, 888 & EX-70 headphones and the D-915 Discman and I have to say that these are excellent products. I can't comment on any of their other current stuff though.

Out of the above I think the EX-70 is not up to the standards of the others but they are still enjoyable though.

I noticed that some time ago Sony started producing products for budget prices - I think that's where they started to go downhill - up until then they produced quality products you could trust.

What we do need Sony for is innovation though - I honestly think they are one of the only Japanese companies to invest money is new technology - some good and some bad. I think at the end of the day you have to carefully pick anything you intend to purchase and not just rely on the name.

the v6 headphones, d6c walkman, d3 walkman, and d777 discman are/were all "sony USA consumer products". so was the cd1700. these are the best of their kind in the world. period.

to say sony sucks without taking their whole product line into consideration is like saying: "everyone agrees sennheiser sucks, right? oh, but you have to exclude the hd600, the 580, the orpheus... so NOW they suck, right?"

see my point? without sony we wouldn't have the worlds best portable cd player, or the worlds best dynamic headphones, or sacd, or minidisc, or for that matter cds!! you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

You make a very good point, but the real pity here is that the biggest sellers for Sony are mostly crap. For the most part the really good products that Sony makes don't sell well (at least here in the states), but at least Sony does continue to make a handful of very good products.

The last time I checked the Sony SCD-1, SCD-777ES, and C333ES were selling like hot cakes.

That's relative to other ES-series products, which aren't anywhere near as readily available as the mass-market Sony crap. Too bad I couldn't fit all those "mass-market consumer" words into the titles of this thread or the accompanying poll.

Any of the "plain" (mass-market) Sony home components way outsell any of the ES-series somponents - but most of the "mass-market" Sony home component owners don't review them at all. That's right - "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all."

Ok... lets see

Sony TV... 29X1, I bought this 6 years ago, and it still has a perfect picture

Sony VCR... SLV-E710, bought around about 4 years ago... still great picture quality, never even needed to clean the heads!!

Sony Discman... D777 Bought in 1995/6, still sounds great... yeah, the pot is starting to fail on the remote, but all it needs is some contact cleaner

Sony Minidisc... MZ-R55, great sound quality... yeah some chrome is coming off of the buttons, but its not had any mechanical or other failures in the 2 years i've had it...

Sony Discman... D-EJ825, yes, admittedly i'm disappointed with this BUT that is in comparison to my D777... Not sure how bad it would be if i didn't have a "reference" discman to begin with

Numerous Sony Head/Ear'phones... Hit and miss on sonic virtues, but overall i think they're worth the thumbs up

So... None of my equipment is particularily new, and NONE of it has gone wrong

All the Sony bashers amongst us, what is it you're actually bashing? Value for money? Yeah, it might not be the cheapest gear on the block, but for the most part this goes into R&D for the products, as someone else in this thread has already mentioned, Sony has designed, and patented most of the electronic equipment that we use today (Except VCRs... JVC took that honour)

Someones misfortune is someone elses good luck at the end of the day... no matter what manufacturer, there will always be someone who bums out on luck... thats the way of life, but i'm glad to say that i'm not one of those people

Well if you only buy a product by its brand name then you probably get what you deserve. Sony makes some good products and some bad ones, like most companies. Lets see, right now I have a C333ES, a set of V6's and an old D5A. But I also own many other brands. My next purchases will include a new television for the living room and a DVD player (hey I didn't buy a CD player until 1992). I am currently looking at some Sony models for these but right now Sony models are not #1 in either category. Oh, I voted indifferent. Sony is so big and has so many products that it almost seems a statistical liklihood that most will be mediocre at best.

then by that logic the title for this thread should be:
"RANT: I'm starting to hate Sony USA consumers"

don't fault sony for giving the people what they want. the really good sony products are available, it is just the majority of electronics buyers in the us don't give a rat's ass about sound quality, so sony caters to them too. they are a business first, after all.

Just digging up a thread that had lain dormant for over three months...

Well, considering that Sony's consumer product line (as a whole) since the mid-1990's is erratic in overall quality - some good, some great, but most of the products mediocre at best - I'd say they deserve a place at F**kedCompany.com.

HAHA!!! APRIL FOOL'S!!!!!!!
